Wells Fire station Past and PresentThis picture was taken at Wells Fire Station on Thursday 16th July 2009. It shows the two Volvo appliances that are currently on the run at Wells although the one at far end is a Div reserve and far more important is the two Dennis F28 machines in the middle. Both of the Dennis appliances were stationed at Wells in the sixties and seventies. The aluminuium sisdee appliance is Dennis F28 Water Tender 25LYD which was driven down to Somerset from Eastbourne that morning (a feat in itself) to reunite with the other Dennis F28 Pump Escape 22FYD.
25LYD was issued new to Bridgwater in 1961 and after being rebuilt in 1963 following an RTA it was transferred to the Retained station at Radstock. In 1968 it was transferred again to Wells as the first away water tender alongside 22FYD which was new to Wells in 1960 as a pump escape and later converted into a Water Tender Ladder. Both machines were replaced in 1978 and unfortunately the old Fire Station in Princes Rd where they lived side by side for 10 years was knocked down in 1990.
