Hi, Very interesting photo, Graham. As Pete has suggested, it would be great to see the large car in a stand alone photo. It appears to be a Humber Snipe or Super Snipe, generally used as personal transport for Fire Force Commanders and the like. The FFC of 16th Fire Force had such while Divisonal Officers used other large cars; ours had a 1937 Pontiac 8. But what is all the stuff on the roof. There is an elevated beacon, is it part of the roof contents? A Control Unit maybe, but it is lettered on the back door as being a unit assigned to a sub=division station. Any more information available?
Perhaps, this large car is meant to represent the cars fitted out to tow a Trailer Pump, which would have the ladders stowed on the roof; and be assigned to a Station.
I took my Driving Test on a later-model Humber Super Snipe, here in Canada, in the winter, in the snow. Great fun.....
My father served in the AFS and then NFS and later Lancashire Fire Brigade. His first Fire Appliance on the outbreak of war in the AFS was a Dagenham manufactured 1938 Ford V8 saloon fitted with a ladder rack and towing a trailer pump
Hi Springer By any chance did your father give you any photos of either AFS or NFS days? They would be most welcome by many on this site. Early V8 Fords were a rarity, most conversions to Towing Vehicles were the more available American V8s from 1936 and 1937. Bob Graham
