Some of these were used by the AFS as hoselayers and as water supply vehicles (with inflatable rafts, hoses and pupms). We had some boxbody versions in the Army - they're absolutely horrible to drive!

Commonly used by the AFS as a pipe carrier, carrying the heavy plastic 6" piping and victolic couplings to use the 6" throughput on the Green Monster pumps.

This isn't a pipe carrier though Colin. The bodywork for the pipe carrier is diferent, they dindt have a canvas hood over the back and the framework doubled the hight of the vehicle.

Commer Q4 Lorry 388 XUJ. Built 1955, registered in 1964 (ALF 9B). Served as an Auxiliary Fire Service vehicle until AFS disbanded in 1968. Stored until 1988 then sold off. Original registration number was also sold. Present Owner, Peter Thomas, Devon.
According to the handbook from the 2011 fire rally at Escot House this was used by the AFS as a petrol carrier. Perkins engine, now that I cannot comment on, but the bage looks good, being a retired Perkins engine fitter.
Oh Mike, give me a Perkins V8-540 any day. I grew up with them inside Ford D, Dennis RS/SS and Dodge G12/13 water tender ladders. The sound and the smoke permiating from the exhaust made the classic British fire engine for me.
Hi Davey, yes you're absoltely correct. I was commenting on the use of these large load carriers by the AFS. I seem to recall the pipe carriers had lockers along the sides where all the couplings were stored. (I think)

The Commer would originally have had a petrol engine when built
Colin that's right they did have lockers down each side for the couplings, they were open backed with poles to hold the pipes in place. I took a picture of one at the museum at Elsecar will look for it and post it on here.
I now own this truck, she is a live in truck and our home. Would love some help getting her mechanics in order, I am loving reading all about her. Please do reach out if you know anything further about her. Now in Dorset and much loved
