Mercedes Benz 1317 Vetter, from Chile, in the past was used by the 15 Company(www.15.cl), It´s used to carry Ladders. Now the Fifth Company from Conchali-Huechuraba owns
strangely it says "Feuerwehr" instead of "Bomberos" meaning both Fire Brigade, maybe a tribute to it´s german origin Mercedes+Vetter are both german companies.
Andreas, the 15 is the German Company of Santiago, founded by german immigrants, that´ s why we use Feuerwehr, instead of using Bomberos and also the 15 use german Helmet and uniforms, for more information visit www.15.cl www.ccchab.cl Other cases is the italian Comany that in the Fire truck says VIGILI DEL FUOCO. Fernando.
I think in Chile, various immigrant groups form some of the fire companies (volunteers?). You can look at www.15.cl for some details. It's in Spanish, but the home page says "Deutsche Feuerwehrkompagnie, Stadt Santiago. I saw a link from that site to another company formed by Italian immigrants - the truck says "Vigili del Fuoco". There's also a blue-and-white pumper from a Dalmatian company. An interesting custom.
The vehicle is also interesting - a long truck that carries a supply of ground ladders and other equipment, but no aerial ladder. In the US we called this a "city service truck" - they used to be common enough but we haven't used them for several decades (the sixties, maybe?).
These amazing ladder carriers are still in use, and new ones have been placed in service recently.
Now they include hydraulic rescue gear and are a bit more equipped like our Rescue Squads, but they retain the center aisle body and the dozen assorted ladders hung on each side!
Chile is the only major country in the World that I know about which operates an exclusively unpaid all-volunteer fire service throughout all of its communities, including Santiago with more than five million citizens - twice the size of Chicago!
