Marietta's 1952 Chevrolet Rescue
This Chevrolet Panel truck was donated to the Marietta Fire Department in 1952 by the Marietta Lions Club and was placed in service as the first rescue truck in the city. It was used during the infamous Atherton Drug store explosion in 1962 and during the ice storm of 1972. It was refurbished by the Lions Club in the early 1990s.
(Odd, the lettering on the door says it was donated in 1950. Neat trick to donate a truck that hasn't been built yet.)

Early fire department protocols when it came to EMS ambulance response were sometimes rather basic.
Often referred to as "scoop and swoop", the approach was often simply to get the patient into the van and drive as fast as possible to the nearest hospital.
At the time, this was probably the best anyone could hope for, but things have thankfully changed a lot in the past sixty years!
But it did take a long time for the fire service management of EMS to become commonplace, and it is still not the norm in many cities - as well as most smaller communities.
Even in New York City, with over 4, 000 dedicated FDNY EMS personnel, the first ambulance on scene is often a volunteer organization or hospital unit!
