What a great line-up......memories of Manchester London Road, Liverpool Hatton Gardens, Birmingham's Corporation Street and of course Londons Lambeth HQ!
a great line up. Birmingham corporation street has now gone. The second city in the country hasn't got a station in the city now. My mum told me when my granddad was stationed there that every bay had a appliance of some sort in it. It only had 2 PRL's when it closed down it use to have 2 PRL's and a TL but the high and mighty said it didn't warrent one as there was two stations on the outskirts of the city that had a HP and a ALP.
Interesting comment Tg,in actual fact going back to the last days of the National Fire Service which might have been your grandads era(circa 1947/48)it was a truly brilliant line-up. In operation from the station at that time was a 1939 Leyland SKFT rescue tender EDJ 877,a 1935 Leyland Metz 104ft turntable ladder BOF 389(I've just posted a picture of that),2x1934 Leyland New World pumps BOF 386 and DOK 831;and also a 1939 Leyland SKFT pump escape EDJ 878.As well as the mensioned, there were staff cars, and also other ancilliary appliances.Really brilliant.

thank you for that Pete my mom was born there in 1944 in flat 12. My grandad ended his career at the rank of station officer after serving and living at many station's such as Erdington,Kings Norton and selly oak which I believe went a long time ago. Kings norton have three bays but are now running 1 PRL just shows how times have changed.
Even larger fire stations are not only still to be found in many French cities and towns, but also in several places in both Germany and Spain.
The largest I have personally visited was however in Kuwait City. This had more than 40 bays, and they were mainly occupied by road tractors and 30, 000 liter semi trailer tankers, which were used to relay water in the event of major fires.
