Vehicles like this are commonly attached to many German volunteer fire stations. They are of course very often used for general non-emergency transport of members - but are also deployed for additional personnel to respond to alarms after the front line units have been dispatched with the appropriate numbers of crew members on board.

With a population of 38, 000, Maintal has an entirely unpaid volunteer fire service with four fire stations, operating twenty seven vehicles and fourteen trailers, including three boats.

Several of their units can be seen on this site, although some are older vehicles which have been replaced...
