This is Thornaby's Open Day on 15.July 2000. From the viewers left we have R247JNL (Echo 3/fn13) a Scania 94D/E-One WrT, N746YAJ(Echo 1/fn22) a Dennis Sabre/J Dennis WrL and J334THN, a Landrover L4 with a Boat Trailer. The Landrover is I believe, now a service van.

Chris:

I always thought that Cleveland's unique white faces were rather odd. But if they were an important safety feature, why was the LR wearing red and black? Was drowning less of an emergency than getting burned?

Drowning at RTA's not that common though! I believe the white is to make them more visible when stationary.

Craig:

Why take a boat trailer to an RTA? Makes sense in the Netherlands, where a decent number of RTAs involve vehicles in canals, but perhaps not so frequent in Cleveland...

If white faces were good for increasing visibility on full-size Scanias and Dennises, why not also on the much smaller LRs, especially as they came with black grilles from the factory?

Hi Rob, that's the point AFAIK the white is to make appliances more visible when parked at RTA's and incidents on busy roads in poor visibility and at night. The water rescue unit is unlikely to be at RTA's so doesn't need the white. That's my theory anyway, there might just not be enough front end on a Land Rover to paint!

Trailer can be detached if not required for a R.T.C. or, if kept attached would be readily available whilst mobile to be ordered on to a "life saving incident" where the boat is required. In times of austerity, lack of money, lack of money, lateral thinking! is required. BY the way the BRITISH fire service is doing a fantastic job, stop nitpicking it!!

Thanks Craig. Some German fire services actually do also paint the black grilles on their appliances white for added visibility. But those that do this, paint every type of truck grille, which seems to me to make more sense...
