GMC/Locomotors RT Tyne & Wear Fire Brigade

This is one of three GMC/Locomotors RT's operated by Tyne and Wear Metropolitan Fire Brigade during the late 80's and 90's period. This one was photographed at Fossway (I think) whilst I was on a visit with the Fire Brigade Society around 1998. I once saw one of these towing a DCU trailer racing through the Tyne Tunnel on Blues and Twos. It made a very impressive sight!

locomotors were an engineering/ body building company
(you give them a chassis they give you back a fire engine)

Ah, thanks Allan.

GMC - General Motors Corporation - sometimes nick-named a "Jimmy". Corporation experiencing a bit of financial bother, at the moment, according to the head-lines....

Do y'know - exchange the beacons' blue lenses for red, and you could easily slip it into any North American Fire-Hall; until someone jumps into it, and finds the steering-wheel on the wrong side.

Great photo.

To Pat R.B, Glad you like the photo, I'll upload some more of these shortly.
These GMC's were very unusual to me because of their Transatlantic appearence. They reminded me of something similar which I remember seeing on the telly around 1977 called 'Emergency' which featured a similar looking vehicle.

Chris, not really that important but I thought that I might just mension that the apparatus used in the Los Angeles County Fire Department series 'Emergency'(Rescue Squad 51),the hit television series from the 1970's was a 1972 Dodge D30.Gorgi back in the 70's made a good model of it in 1/43-1/50th scale, also the American company Code 3 Collectables made a great model of it in there 1/64th scale, which is now unavailable and is now a collectors piece.

Hi Pete, you can still find the Corgi model at swapmeets in various conditions and prices. I've never seen the Code three Collectables variant.

Chris,when you've got the time check-out the code 3 website.Its www.code 3 collectables.net
Click on View the Collection, then on the left of page click on Release Schedules-you want year 2001.It shows the Dodge D30 Rescue Squad truck,Engine(Crown Pumper)from the series, and also from the series the model of the actual fire station from the series. The site's worth looking at even if your not a model collector.

Thanks Pete, will have a look at that sometime in the near future. I am a model collector, but as the subject is so vast these days, I only acquire those buses and fire engines carrying liveries from North East England. A company called Ralph and Sue Horton Models, did I believe produce two self assembly kits featuring Cleveland subjects. One was Stranton's Range Rover RIV, the other was a Dennis SS (done as H551NAJ I think) whilst Fire Brigade Models produced a nice Sabre in Cleveland livery as Thornaby's NX03LJV. I remember him saying to me once that he was going to do a Cleveland Scania 94D but I've never seen it.
I have the Sabre model in all the North East liveries, and I also have the lovely Hartlepool Dennis F12 from Corgi.
A couple of earlier models also from Corgi were the AEC Mercury WrL and the Dennis Snorkel both of which appeared in Cleveland livery, but both were unfortunately inaccurate portrayals of the vehicles featured. Nonetheless they looked good, and I couldn't not purchase them.At the moment, I am waiting for Oxford Diecasts to do their Green Goddess to 1/43 scale in Teesside and Hartlepool liveries.

I managed to get hold of the Dennis SS Cleveland model kit Chris, it is J688 VEF and its a Redcar machine, I haven't managed to construct it yet mind but I will do sometime!

Chris, can you help me? Where are the 56 batch of Sabres in T&W? I've been told 5 of the 6 are at Nissan Way Training Centre? The other one's in South Shields.

Of the three GMCs that Tyne & Wear had, F156/157 SRE were Locomotors bodied, G830 PNX was by Reynolds-Boughton.
