There were some F8s and F12s with this kind of unpainted aluminium bodywork, and of course it rapidly became widespread in the UK. But it was a rarity in any other country - except where fire services bought British appliances.
Was Dennis the first to offer this kind of bodywork, or did it originate with a different body builder? I think it must have been introduced around 1953 or 1954, but I am by no means sure.
I remember a very odd-looking F28 demonstrator visting Darlington fire station in the late 1950s. One side was just like 703 LYA, with unpainted bodywork, a folding door and roller shutters, the other side was the old fashioned red painted finish with a hinged cab door and slam lockers. It also had both bells and a siren.
I imagine it was partially rebuilt after doing its demonstration tour, as I think it was probably just too strange looking for any CFO to buy it as it was.
