Snaker - in winter season, do you have problems with the snow and ice, covering up and blocking your underground fire hydrants ?
In Canada, we have all our hydrants above the ground, for this reason. The water-main valves are over 4 feet (xxx cm) beneath the surface - below the frost line; and remotely operated by long rods, through the middle of the hydrant.
Yes, Pat! Winter is serious problem in winter! In St-Petersburg each hydrant have plate at nearest wall, column, etc. At plate marked, where to look for the hatch. It also marked the appointment of the well (telephone, drainage, sewerage or water). So we are looking for hydrants!
Hi Pat and Snaker! We has the same system with plates for underground firehydrants in Sweden. They are red with white digits. You can see them on a wall, a streetlight pool, and sometimes on a single pool with only the plate on it.
