Dodge Water tender CYB14S leaving Wells Fire Station 10.10.1990

This shot shows the Dodge Water tender about to leave the Old Wells Fire Station in Princes Road for the last time on 10/10/1990 enroute to the new station. Where the van is parked on the right is where the Water tender Ladder was normally parked. The lines on the floor show the positioning and as you can see the Water tender had to leave before the Ladder could be got out. The bay on the left was for the Land rover.

Nice to see the inside of a fire station for a change, most pictures show the outside so an inside shot provides a nice bit of variety. Why didn't the WrL go in the middle? I always thought that the "Ladder" or "Escape" was always first out of a fire station.

George, certainly since the seventies possibly earlier up until the early nineties the first away on any two pump station in Somerset was the Water Tender. The water tender carried the RTA equipment and also the extra ladders i.e the roof ladder as can be seen in the photo.

The old Preston Borough station in Tithbarn Street had 5 appliance bays but only 3 sets of doors so turnouts could be somewhat complicated depending on what was required!!

Thank you Mr Pickford for the information. I hadn't realised that in two pump stations other equipment bar the 135 was shared between appliances. I had always thought that all WrT and a WrL carried the same equipment apart from the ladder in the middle.

George no only the first away carries the RTA gear and that is still the same today in Somerset although obviously the Ladder is now the first away. Hence why you often see on Somerset's website newsdesk at a two vehicle RTA they have often mobilised two WRL's from separate stations rather than a WRL and WRT from a two pump station.

I didn't know that Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue had a newsdesk, I have now discovered it and have been spending quite a lot of time looking at it! So thank you for telling me about it. I have also noticed from the papers and newsdesk that Yeovil's ERT seems to go to most RTAs as well.
