Dennis Fire Boat Transporter and Fire Boat 'Tinea'

This unusual combination was based at Station Foxtrot in the East End of Newcastle. The boat was launched from Spillers Quay using a TL to lift it from the transporter into the river Tyne. Twin 50HP outboards gives the all aluminium boat a good turn of speed. Access hatches enable river water to be fed into onboard portable pumps for either delivery through hoses to the shore or for firefighting using the roof mounted monitor. This machine went into preservation on the 1st of December 2006.

It's quite rare to see a Dennis is converted into a boat carrier.Anywhere it's a complicated process to bring the boat to water. Why they don't install a mechanical crane (like Hi-Ab or Palfinger crane)to make the job easier.Compare with picture 131

The decision to deploy using a TL was two fold. First, the home station for the boat had a TL and secondly the river Tyne is tidal. When the river is low, quite a long reach is required to position the boat into the water. Although I am sure a HI-AB of suitable size is available the TL performs the task without any effort. The replacement boat is launched in an identical manner today.

Best wishes from Northumberland, England.

Seems an odd use of resources!
What happens if the TL is already on a shout and the boat has to be launched?

Colin, the Brigade has 3 TL's (actually now 2 Bronto's and a TL). There had never ever been any conflict.

Dedicated boat carriers are not very common anywhere except in Germany, as most fire services in most countries seem to rely on trailers and the availability of slipways - unless of course their boats are already moored in the water. Hamburg probably has the largest fleet of fire and rescue boats at marine fire stations of any city I have come across, and almost every volunteer fire station has a boat trailer too.

The dedicated German boat carriers tend to have their own cranes mounted just behind the cab, unless they rely on a ramping, in which case they often have a crew compartment for the water rescue/dive team crew. Amsterdam has water borne boats but also uses their 40 ton crane to place trailered boats in the canals if needed. It is also often used to recover vehicles from the water, which occurs all too often!

Some examples of both types of dedicated boat carriers are to be found on this site….

Saw this boat at work at a warehouse fire early 90s. TBH the crew looked very unfamiliar with getting it to pump water. But I suppose it is a rare occurrence.

When a fire brigade has only one boat and it is not used very often, it becomes critical for those who will form its crew to practice and drill with it frequently enough that the kind of problem Craig described does not crop up when it is actually used. Unfortunately there are numerous videos around - from many countries - where it is clear that some fire crews quite often don’t know where equipment is, how to wear PPE, when to don BA, how to manage hose lines, how to be safe working on ladders, and/or how to use various useful tools such as fans or other ventilation aids.

Modern trucks carry a lot of different equipment, so this unfamiliarity is understandable. But it does indicate that quite a few fire services - and not all of them volunteers - tend to place less emphasis on practice and training than they perhaps should.
