The Dennis'D'Series was one of 2 recieved in the yellow livery in 1971,the other going to the stn at Storrington. The only other Dennis'D' delivered in the yellow livery was the first in 1970,this went to the station at Midhurst. From 1972,all the
other Dennis'D'Series(17 in total)of appliances ordered were delivered in the traditional red.

I remember seeing a yellow appliance at East Grinstead , in 1975; there was also a red appliance there. I don't suppose anyone would be able to tell me what types they were- I was too young to recall much about them.

In 1975 East Grinstead was allocated VPO 699N
Dennis"D"WRL(RED) & UPN 47H Bedord TK1250(Janspeed
Coversion)/HCB WRT(RED), Ex:East Sussex 1974, if a Yellow machine was OTR is was one of two:-5326 BP
Bedford SLZ/Miles WRTE(also used asa WRT)or 68 KPX
Bedford J4/HCB WRL, both reserves, kept in the
north of county.

Martyn, thats the first I've heard that the old Storrington 1958 Bedford(5326 BP)Wrt/E had been re-liveried in the yellow.I've traced most of them, but didn't know that one had been done???.

Added by Pete Matten on 09 January 2013.
Yes, its on the list, but before you ask, i do not have a photo of it in yellow, Bob C may have?, there was only two spares in yellow in 1975 so this narrows it down.

Thanks for that, Martyn. I am fairly certain that the yellow appliance was 5326 BP, as I recall yellow sides, rather than merely the yellow front of a Bedford J-type. From my position facing the station, the yellow appliance was on my left, closest to the drill tower, and the red appliance was on my right. From their respective positions, would you be able to tell whether it was VPO 699N or UPN 47H? Presumably, their positions would tell you which was the wholetime pump and which was the retained pump, and, therefore, which pump 5326 BP was standing in for?

Added by Bill Edwards on 11 January 2013.
The WRL would normally be nearer the watchroom, as this was the Daycrewed machine, the Wrt was manned
by Retained, your note about yellow sides, 5326 BP would be yellow from front to rear crewcab doors,
rear wheel arch and open hose reel locker, 68 KPX yellow front only. 5326 BP would have the Big Bedford Chromimium plated Radiator Grille, 68 KPX was flat fronted.

As the yellow appliance was closer to the watchroom, which is on the same side as the drill tower, it would have been filling in for the day-crewed appliance, which I would assume was VPO 699N as this was the newer appliance. Am I right? If so, the red appliance would have been UPN 47H.
Your comment about yellow sides confirms that the yellow appliance was 5326 BP, and not 68KPX.
Do you know if any photos of either 5326 BP or UPN 47H exist, or even if either of the appliances themselves still exist?

The Dennis'D'Series WrL VPO 699N was delivered to the West Sussex Fire Brigade on 21/9/74 and was allocated from new to East Grinstead, a station inherited the same year from East Sussex. On the run still as the 2nd pump on station was the now ex-ESFB 1970 Bedford TK/HCB Angus WrT UPN 47H.This appliance was still at East Grinstead in 1975 before being transferred to another ex-ESFB station, this being the one-pump retained station at Turners Hill where it was to spend many more active years service.

Thanks, for that, Pete. If UPN 47H was the second pump, this would be the red appliance which I saw. Do you know where I could find a photo of this appliance, and where Icould find one of 5326 BP in either red or yellow livery?

Bill, Bedford SLHZ/miles WrE was brand new to school hill at station 14 Storrington it was one of two supplied to the brigade in the financial years of 1957/58. Previous deliveries were in total red livery with 5326 BP this had a red embossed alloy livery the sister machine was identical both could be used as escape or water tender role with a light portable pump facility behind the water tank capacity 400 gallons. In deed these were a very professionally built a smashing handsome appliance for its day. In 1971 Storrington received a brand new Dennis/Jaguar/D series WrL in ICI Coventry Fire Brigade Yellow with embossed alloy rear panelling. 5326 BP WAS returned to Brigade Workshops complete with escape (Bailey) (Ajax 35ft) here it was decided to re-paint the appliance yellow I don't know why it really did not need it, I am sure the escape was never repainted it was re-issued from here as a pump water tender where it was to be based as a regional reserve in the north of the county at hurst road Horsham. During 1976 it was placed on the run at station 15 Selsey as a spare due to complications with their water tender 67 KPX.
I do have several photos of 5326 BP in red but sadly none in yellow nor have I seen any among collectors etc etc. 5326 BP ended up being withdrawn from service in late 1976 it ended up in Chatfields Ferous Metals in North Mundham near Chichester it stood in the yard for two years if not longer before being cut up along with two other appliances Bedford S Miles TPO 165
and also Karrier Gamecock HCB (only one made) WrT
XPO 373. So what became of its sister appliance YBP 83 this was brand new to the high street Worthing fire station and as mentioned was identical in appearance YBP 83 was to stay at worthing all of its life until in 1964 it was involved in a bad R.T.A outside Worthing town hall on the way to a malicious call at Bentalls the appliance overturned and caught fire all the crew got out with just cuts and bruises fortunatly
the engine was complete write off. Bedford J/5 WrE 205 BPO replaced it at Worthing along with a elderly Austin E.C.U (used for the escape only) 205 BPO had a problem with the Escape mountings which had to be modified as the brigade had purchased two additional escapes from Surrey which in turn had to be modified one for this appliance. Week or so later saw Bedford S HCB WrE 2510 PX from 07 Littlehampton replace it with 205 BPO being placed short term at the station (two water tenders) hope you find this of interest.

Thanks for that, Bob; most interesting. If you could please post the photos which you have, of 5326 BP, I would be vey pleased to see them.

Added by Bill Edwards on 16 January 2013.
Was 5326 BP the same design as the Bedford S/ Miles appliance in picture 31402?
