Historical Line-up National Fire Service Vehicles

Historical Line-up of Preserved National Fire Service Vehicles.

Although all these vehicles are shown on their own on this site (see my pictures), this unique
photo really captures the war period N.F.S type of appliances that were used lined up together.
On the left of photo we have a 1942 Leyland TD7 half cab/Merryweather 100' turntable ladder,
next we have a 1943 Dodge 82A mobile dam unit, and last on the right of the picture we have
a 1942 Austin K2 (ATV) auxilliary towing vehicle.
Although this photograph was taken back in the 1990's,all these appliances are actually still
in preservation today, and all except for the TL are displayed at various venue's annually.
A tribute to British manufacturing of old,and the preservasionists who still care for them today.

Cool. Are these from World War II

Added by Andy Watson on 31 March 2009.
Andy,I really don't think cool is the right word, maybe hot rods is a better description.
These appliance all date from the early 1940's and were produced for the war effort 1939-45 but many though would actually go on and serve in county brigades(1948)for many more years.

you may be interested to know that the leyland was badly vandalised a couple of years ago and with scrap at such a high price the inevitable end was in sight

What a great line-up of typical WW-2 Fire-Apparatus, in their NFS gray paint-scheme.

Thanks for the photo, Pete.

Thanks for the comments Pat_RB,much appreciated, sorry to hear though from J Huckle that this might
be another old classic lost-not through time, but
through vandalism.I now somehow think we'll never
see an ATV,MDU and TL in the NFS colours together
again in a line-up such as the likes of this.

Sorry I should have explained that I had the job of moving the TL after vandals had finished. I was able to store it awaiting a decision on its faith. Good news restoration has started. Luckily the badges signs, bells seats and rare bits all survived. The locker doors and all the glass are being replaced mow. It is in Bedfordshire. Hope to have it out in Summer.

Thanks Mr Huckle for the up-date on the Leyland TD7,would have been sorry to see this one go to
where many have already gone-'The Breakers'.

Thanks, J.Huckle, for advising us that this wonderful old girl has not been junked.

It would certainly gladden the hearts of Devoted Readers here; if you could get us some photos of her, when she is back up and running.

These "lower-half-of-a-double-decker-bus" Aerials are quite something; and gave worthy service in war, and peace - they certainly deserve to be known; and shown to us in other Fire Services, and other countries.

I'll try to post a wartime photo of GLW 410 in Aberdeen - not best quality.

Best Regards

Hello Pete,I'm sure many of the old-timers who remember these classics from the period will love to see an original shot of GLW 410 whilst in the service with the National Fire Service.I'm sure an actual photo from the period will be really a most welcome addition.I look forward to it,Pete.

Dear Mr Huckle,

If you can get in touch, a good friend of mine (D. Scott) may be able to provide some history / photos of GLW 410 from Aberdeen.

All the best.

hi pete. sorry so late replying. I would be pleased to to know more about the t.l..work has continued at a steady pace to repair the vandalism

Added by John Huckle on 06 June 2009.
Thanks for Progress Reassurance, Mr J.Huckle.

Gotta note the significant date of your Posting - eg The Sixth of June - D-Day 65th anniversary.

Merryweather had actually fitted some Landing Craft, with their Turntable Ladder for scaling the cliffs on D-Day Landings - American sector, I think.

Hi, I have just bought GXM 627, a mobile dam unit about 7 weeks ago. The body that she had on her was rather rotten to say the least, so my mates and myself are putting her back to as near original condition as possible. She worked for some time at the Isle of Wight, ending her working days at Hoverport. We are hoping to have her back on the road and rally scene next year[2014].

Dave Battersby, once a Ford of Britain employee?

Added by Rob Johnson on 20 November 2013.
No, I worked for Vauxhall at Luton for a while, then spent 31 years on the buses, starting with United Counties Omnibus Co. Ltd. Ending 5 years ago, still at Luton, Beds.
