Dennis Sabre Cab with new Airwave Radio

Dennis Sabre Cab with new Airwave Radio
This picture (Courtesy of Tyne and Wear Fire Brigade) shows the interior of a Dennis Sabre Cab fitted with the new Airwave radio which provides secure communication. Tyne and Wear are one of the first brigades to receive this equipment which is already in use with polic and ambulance services. It provides interoperability between all services.

For the Fire Brigade enthusiast it means the end of being able to eavesdrop on the daily activity of your looal Brigade. Before Tyne and Wear switched over I had been recording the RT traffic so that my preserved appliances could still hear the voice of LP (the Tyne and Wear Control Room) in the future. If everone else did the same before it is too late we could make a compilation CD....

nice to see the inside of the cab instead of outside shame more pictures of the inside of cabs aren't posted. then we could see how they have changed over the years

Seems like most things bought by the brigades to breakdown alot ....

Slowly but surely we are getting a national fire service, national call signs, countrywide radio's,
new dimension in every brigade, new, stupid? ranks,
it's all going to pot!

Added by Bob on 01 April 2009.
Bob,your right. Its certainly not like the old(NFS)National Fire Service days though. All the same idea's-60 years on,and they've still not got right.

Well.....I am a traditionalist...change for the sake of change is stupid...but radio's which are clear and with limited black-spots and which can communicate with other services up and down the country......we went all the way from Cheshire to Gloucestershire for the floods and had to rely on mobiles which due to the situation down there was not reliable......and because the new system allows us to talk to other brigades we need to use a common callsign system otherwise it wouldn't make sense!!! N.D. equipment...well nowt new there....we relied on green goddesses as emergency reserves before.....the new HV pumps are fantastic.......the new Rank to Role system...well I agree about that. Most of the flak I hear about the firelink Airwave radio system is from fire enthusiasts who are complaining that they wont be able to eavesdrop on the network any more...Well with all due respect that is tough!!!! thats not what the radio's are there for. There is confidential information which needs to be transmitted from time to time and maybe the general public should not be able to tune in whenever they want to.

And in North Yorkshire the mobile phone is still used, yes if the system works, an amazing piece of kit but i have heard it's not that clever and was prone to failing, maybe because North Yorks is so rural, but things like these should be solved at the stages of development, not found when in service !

Hello Barrie,OUCH,From Bob,thats me told,i forgot to mention Regional controls,no,lets not go there.

Added by Bob on 02 April 2009.
No lets not.....that certainly does not need fixing !!!!!! RCC's will have to work, they are throwing so much money on the project they will never admit when it doesn't work!

Added by Barrie Green on 02 April 2009.
I cant comment on the radios lads as my last transmission was on a Pye! ( radio, not pork!) As for regionalisation and the NFS...Regional controls are a cost cutter, nowt else. Nothing like a good controller who knows the ground. I support an NFS though, reasons are many, but mainly to stop the stupid ideas that we all get narked about on here ie wasting money on gizmoes and stripes. I really believe in one standard machine design for a given job. You can still have a county identity but standardise the equipment and stop wasting brass!

Added by John Stott on 25 April 2009.
Don't use brass anymore, too much cleaning involved!

Added by Bob on 25 April 2009.
As for the Regional control they will not work, when you look at the details closely. As for the radio's they are very clear and my brigade has had not probs up to now from what I have heard. One of the reasons given for the new radios was for security reasons following on for 9/11 in New York, nobody can listen in with a scanner. What rubbish you can go on the internet anytime and listen to live broadcast from all the Boroughs in New York, they have not gone for this very expensive waste of public money.

In the Netherlands we have a digital network for the emergency services. You can't listen to this with a scanner. Next to the digital radios the Fire department are alerted with pagers. The paging text you can read. The pagers can be bought by Fire enthousiasts. So you can find out where the Fire brigade is going to. But Paul, is the FDNY working with digital radios ?? I think they are at this moment still working with old fashion style radios.

Aye Bob, cleaning kept you occupied and you could say you knew each piece of kit well! lol! As for secure communications Marcel is right, it isnt secure, you can listen to Air Traffic Control for loads of airports live online. Digital gives clearer reception no doubt, but as far as 99% of fire service traffic is concerned, confidentiality seems a bit of a red herring to me.

Gentlemen! It´s the same in Sweden! With the new radio-system (Rakel)you can´t hear what the call is about! All vehicles (Police, F&Rs, Ambulancesevice) has a 7 digit number. The first is 1 for Police, 2 for F&Rs, and 3 for Ambulance-service!The next 2 is for the province they are located at.The last 4 is for witch type of vehicle it is.ONLY the Police and the F&Rs has that. The Ambulances has a 0 added to the old number.
