Cheers Bob....This vehicle is parked at St Helens Bus Museum but in a very poor state of repair. All the windows are broken. After finishing service at Manchester Airport it went to Barton Airport
When did Uk stop using bells on the fire engines? This picture looks like early seventies or something like that. Here in Sweden the bells disapear in the late fourties. Ola
This Rescue Tender went into service in the late 1950s possibly 1958. Bells went out in the 1970s possibly 1980s a few brigades retained bells as a back up as well as rolling sirens and two tone horns.
I'd hazard a guess that the last bells in the UK were on the London Fire Brigade Dennis F131 Pumps that remained in service as reserve machines up to late 1989/early 1990.
Regarding bells, of which I am a fan, the last bells in the UK were on Flying Squad cars ( Scotland Yard ) up until the late 1990s. The last fire service bells I heard in emergency use were on a LFB Dennis in 1986.
my TL built in 61 had them in 84 and had 2 tones fitted to suppliment them from new

Cleveland County were always a proponent of bells as they were considered to be less obtrusive through their country villages. Cleveland's Dennis R Types which all had bells were I think still in service at the start of 1990. Incidentally the last Tyne and Wear appliance with bells (The Newcastle East Fossway E.T.) eas withdrawn in 1984.
Wasn't there also a time when the Flying Squad also had bells under the back bumper, so that if - due to their unobtrusive being - they ever happened to be followed by a marked vehicle, the bell was used as a "drop back" signal.

The bodywork / fire equipment on this appliance was by John Kerr. Another appliance similar to this one served at Jersey Airport in the Channel Islands and at least one other was supplied to Liberia.
according to the latest edition of Fire Cover magazine (no. 184)the fire engineering was by John Kerr, but the bodywork was subcontracted to Jennings of Sanbach, Cheshire. This must be the first Unimog to serve in the UK.
