Bob, if my old memory serves me, I think Rhoose Airport was a county station at one time, although I may be wrong!

You're not the first one to have asked that question, Bob !

probably because Glamorgan/Rhoose airport was owned by the county council before privatisation in the 1980's.

Thanks for the input Gents, according to my records
this vehicle was not used by the airport, they had their own K reg Nubian major. The Glamorgan truck
went to Newcastle airport, and probably influenced
the colour scheme adopted by them.
I am rather surprised that this one was not used at
Cardiff airport, they could have had 2 Nubian majors.
I think that Glamorgan went on a spending spree as
they had at least 2 very large recovery vehicles
and articulated water bowsers towed by ex military
units.

Thanks for that Bob, it might have been a reserve for the airport, it would be nice to know. I cant see any other reason for Glamorgan to have purchased it! Rhoose was a low category airport at the time so one Nubian would have served their purpose. RAF St Athan had a full crashline as well so its a mystery to me.

This machine was based at Bridgend Fire Station and was on the run to Rhoose airport as back up.

Having now read Bob's input, the reason why this Crash Tender was stationed at Bridgend Fire Station was that it would not fit into the old Barry Fire Station. Rhoose Airport was then owned by Glamorgan County Council (before the joint council ownership) and the airport was not that important in those days, plus costs. (whats different). Man power was important and the Airport crew was also the baggage handlers, so using a crew from an outside station as back up made economic sense at the time. The old Glamorgan Fire Service was quite inovative in those days and the tankers were old American Airforce fuel tankers converted by our workshops to water bowsers complete with original tractors with crash gear boxes. We also had a amphibian car (first in UK) The CFO at the time was very forward thinking and was known as "Jones the flames".. RIP

In buying this appliance it meant that Rhose airport could be upgraded
