Photo of 1943 Austin K4 Escape Carrying Unit
This appliance from 1943 is an Austin K4 Escape Carrying Unit (ECU) built to Home Office
specifications for the National Fire Service(N.F.S,)fitted with a front mounted Barton pump.
The appliance can be seen here towing what was known as a box trailor after having had
an extended tow-bar fitted to miss the wheeled escape, but many of these escape carrying
units during the period would actually have towed a trailor pump.
The appliance was purchased from a bus museum in Liverpool in 1988 when in red and in
a very poor condition and transported to Essex by the new owner,it was then totally rebuilt.
Much of the bodywork had to be repaired and then repainted in the war period N.F.S. grey
livery before finally the appliance was displayed at rallies and shows in the UK.
In 1995 the appliance even appeared at the Royal Tournament at Earls Court in London in
a wartime period display of NFS appliances before being sold by the owner in the later part
of the 1990's and is now beleaved to be in a private collection somewhere in the UK.
