We used Shacks at Stanstead.....they flew them in, removed all the radio gear and we burned them. They told us that after many fires the scrapman took away the scrap alli and they were worth as much value then as when they flew them in!
Barrie, they flew them into the RAF Fire School at Catterick, closing the A1. When I think back to all the history thats gone up in smoke nowadays I could weep! When I got to Stanstead they were using steel mockups, a much better idea.
Yes John the modern steel burn rigs are more for the reduction of polution.....I remember when they had a burn up at Teesside you could see the smoke for miles. I remember them landing a V bomber at Catterick....I think it stopped about a foot from the grass!! caused chaos on the A1
Brings back memories, I used to drive a Mk6 at Wittering 1972-75. Thanks for the Pictures. I also have some pictures of training crash fires at RAF Catterick 1972 somewhere.
