Durham county Fire brigade Bedford Breakdown lorry

Bedford G 567 TPT new to Durham County Fire Brigade was designated a Breakdown Lorry and was used to attend road accidents and also to recover Brigade vehicles which had become disabled due to breakdown etc. The lifting crane on the back of the unit had been transplated from an earlier appliance. This machine was replaced by a Dennis Maxim (now preserved) and that in turn was replaced by a Volvo which is due for renewal March 2009

This vehicle was in use with Willinghams recovery near Hull for some years after its retirement from the fire service, it has then been sold on its second retirement into preservation as a recovery vehicle

The thing is of course that the Dennis Maxim (DHN 999J) was an ex-Darlington CB vehicle, and for a time it ran with 6567 PT - the result being that Durham County had a BdL in the North and another in the South.

The Maxim was bought to serve the new A1M motorway, which passed through Darlingtons area there was no access within the borough boundries...The CFO had good powers of persuasion, he also bought a fast ambulance for the motorway at the same time !!!!!

Yes the single rear wheels did limit the rear axle load on these RLs. The dual rear wheel version of the RL chassis had a much higher axle loading but may not have been available when this unit was bought. The Dennis which replaced it had a dual rear wheel setup, but was not a 4X4, as the Darlington CFO at the time saw no need for it.

Unlike the Bedford, whose primary role was to tow disabled fire service vehicles, the Dennis was intended above all to be able to clear Motorway accidents. It would be interesting to hear from local crews how useful it turned out to be.
