1956 Dennis F101/Dennis Pump Escape

1956 Dennis F101/Dennis Pump Escape.

This lovingly preserved 1956 Dennis F101 pump escape of the London Fire Brigade saw active
service at many various locations in the capitol during its working life and is seen here showing
the number 24 which was actually A24 Soho in Shaftsbury Avenue. This was a specially designed
appliance for the London Fire Brigade in that the appliance had single rear wheels.
From 1955 when these appliances were first introduced into the London fleet of appliances, some
thirty-eight in total over a five year period(1955-59)would be purchased. The appliance was fitted
with a Rolls Royce C6 diesel engine of 12 litres capacity, the forerunner of the'Eagle'engine.
I photographed this appliance at the Solent Emergency Vehicle Show, which was the Southampton
Fire Engine and Vintage Vehicle Rally at the Royal Victoria Country Park in Hampshire in 1994.

Sorry Pete, but the station plate on the vehicle is from the old LCC LFB days. It shows the vehicle as belonging to Stn 24 Whitechapel which was in the old C division. Divisional letter prefixes started being used in the GLC brigade in 1965.

Sorry,my mistake. The number 24 displayed on this appliance is actually that of B24 Homerton.Other
photos of this appliance can be viewed on this
site (picture 12449 picture 12450 ) by Mike Cotton.

I drove that actual fire appliance designated as F26 Bethnal Green's pump circa 1969/70 along with its pump escape "brother" PUC 154. During the 1969 dustman's strike I logged thirty three calls on a fifteen hour night shift. Those were the days! Incidentally when the LCC became the GLC in 1964 and the B division became the F division Bethnal Green was the only station to retain its original number.
