Dennis F131 Pump -1977

STY31S is a Dennis F131 Water Tender. During the 1970's all of Tyne and Wears pumping appliances were machines of this type before the phasing in of RS Dennis's during the 1980's. In the above picture the roof mounted monitor can clearly be seen.

The engine is a Perkins V8 640 coupled to a 4 speed Allison auto 'box.

Kilkenny fire services (possibly in UK) still use this Dennis as their second turnout appliance.

I served my apprenticeship as a HGV fitter with tyne & wear fire brigade from 1983 to 1988 and I remember these appliances well and I will have worked on this one.

Hello Trevor,
If you look at www.clavis.co.uk/Dennis you will see some more of the machines which were your era in the workshops.

As this roof monitor was manually operated, I should have thought it would have been much safer to position it in the center of the roof, with the ladders mounted to each side.

Some European countries fitted roof monitors on a few of their pump appliances, and it seems to have been a universal practice to install these in a central location and provide the operator with an unobstructed gangway to access them.

Now, of course, they are usually remote controlled, so they can be almost any where on the roof or bumper.

I think the monitor may have been placed in such a position as to avoid any conflict with the large 135 ladder Rob, if I remember Hong Kong fire service had some really smart Dennis appliances with two monitors either side behind the crew cab, we don't seem to favour roof monitors here in the UK unlike some countries.

I lived on Lambton Avenue a very steep hill. I remember these shaking the foundations as they roared up the bank from Swallwell station.
