Budapest bought two of these primarily for response into the old city areas, some of which were first built up seven hundred years ago and still have very narrow lanes. Other Hungarian cities - including Gyor - also operate a few additional similar units, and the Gyor pumper is on this site.
As well as being very widespread everywhere in Germany, Varios are also quite popular in Spain, and they are also to be found in the Netherlands and Belgium. The appeal is a combination of small overall size, powerful engine and decent payload and pumping capacity.
The usual spec is to combine a 1600-2000 LPM pump with a 1000 or occasionally 1200 liter tank and a 5/6 person cab, although the older German DIN spec called for an 800 LPM pump, no tank and a large 9 seat crew cab - sometimes with a second portable 800 LPM pump too.
Now the Vario is no longer in production, Mercedes is marketing the lightweight Mitsubishi Fuso as a replacement, and Iveco is pushing the Turbo Daily.
