1876 Shand Mason Steamer City of Chester

City of Chester...the 1876 Shand Mason Steamer operated by Cheshire F&RS Heritage Section....photo taken September 2008...I am standing on top of the engine ! The gentleman holding the horse is the engineer responsible for restoring the engine over 25 years ago and has looked after it since, he celebrated his 80th birthday last week and yes..his beard is real!!!

Hi Barry,I vote this picture 'THE PICTURE OF THE MONTH'.Brilliant settings with that lovely old
cottage behind, typical village scenery from an early period, the horses are ready, firemen fully kitted out in their polished brass helmets,we now just need that boiler to be lite and a buff of smoke and we'd really beleave we were stepping
back to a golden era.'The age of the steamer'.

Funny you should say that Pete...It was not possible to light the firebox due to time constraints (we borrowed the horses) I took with me a smoke generator which we use to educate schoolkids but unfortunatly there was no way of making it look realistic....the cottage is in fact a village pub (which we retired to for lunch after the shoot. Thanks for you comments..very much appreciated

Hi excellent, and just to think if he was a fireman from that period he'd need that bread as a crude filter for the smoke.LoL

Long beards were in pre-SCBA (Breathing Apparatus)days - I understand - for crude smoke-filters. The fireman would stuff his whiskers into his mouth, and breath through them. The whiskers would have to be quite long (just experimented with mine) to reach the mouth....

Agree with Pete - this is a terrific period shot of the steamer.
