Yes the AEC Mercury in all it's forms is (to me at least) the epitome of the British Fire Engine. Particularly the North East ones. In the 60's, the South Shields fleet was almost 100% AEC what a sight that must have been! This one dosn't survive today. It was broken up soon after it's withdrawl c1977.
This does not relate to this appliance but a similar one. On 06/03/2013 in Somerset I saw what appears to be an AEC Emergency tender or control unit. The registration is ERA897C. It has a red front and aluminium sides. There is a frame work on the front that looks like it could have housed a winch so I'm guessing an ET. Just out of interest anyone know its history. If you search for the registration on the internet pictures of it should come up.
