Ex Teesside AEC Mercury AXG 2K

This is cropped from a larger photo which was mainly taken for the bus, but I've just realised that this lorry was once a fire engine! It is an AEC Mercury new in 1971 to Teesside Fire Brigade and was one of the first pair of appliances with the distinctive white front still used by the Cleveland brigade. Seen here out of use in the yard of Red Kite Commercial Services in Tilsworth, Bedfordshire, it appears to have been very heavily rebuilt and is virtually unrecognisable.

Hi Adam do you remember the date you photographed this? thanks Ian Mac

This photo was taken in September 2004 but it had gone by the time I visited the yard again in 2007. The DVLA site gives a date of liability of September 2008 but it had been out of use for some time before that so I suspect it might have been scrapped.

AXG2K was one of a pair (the other being AXG29K) of AEC Mercury 7/HCB Angus which were new in 1971 to Teesside fire brigade's new build station at Billingham (on Seaton Carew road). This pair were the first to feature the now famous white fronts currently still part of the Cleveland livery. After withdrawl c1980, this machine saw use as a trainer, and was sold to North East Bus breakers of Annfield Plain in Co Durham. I always thought it had been broken up by them, but as this picture shows obviously not. Just go's to show what else is out there? North East Bus Breakers scrapped many of Cleveland's pre 1980 stock. Another famous yard for withdrawn Fire Appliances in the North East, is Monte's of Fence Houses in County Durham.

Joe, Could you provide further details of this vehicle in use with Crossroads coaches please. Is it Crossroads coaches in County Durham?
