Line up at Glastonbury Fire station 2006

This photo was taken at the Open Day at Glastonbury Fire Station in October 2006 which celebrated the 25th anniversary of the opening of the new station which was built on the same site as the old Victorian Station. The four machines in the photo have at some time in their service life all been stationed at Glastonbury. The Leyland Cub served at numerous Somerset Stations including Glastonbury (now preserved by the brigade), the Dennis F28 Pump Escape was stationed all its life at Glastonbury from 1961 to 1978, the Mercedes 1124 Water Tender Ladder was stationed at Glastonbury for most of its service from 1992 until it was replaced by the MAN/JDC Four Wheel Drive WRL which at the time was the current appliance although this has now been replaced by a newer two wheel Drive MAN/JDC. The only machine missing in the line up was a Dodge K1113/HCB Angus which served at Glastonbury from 1978 to 1992. The Somerset Fire Brigade sign shown in the photo was removed from the old Victorian station before it was demolished and reinstalled on the new station.

I think there is one more appliance missing, a Bedford TK Saxon. I think B872XYA was at Glastonbury for a while as a WrT.

On the southwest999 site in the Glastonbury section there is a picture of the old fire station with 353MYA as a WrL and the Dodge WYD984S as a WrT. In my local Library there is a book about Somerset F.B and in it there is a picture of WYD983S as a WrL running out of Glastonbury. So it looks like two Dodge K.1113s have served at Glastonbury at some time or another.

George, your correct in saying that two Dodge appliances operated from Glastonbury both at the same time. One being WYD 984S(WrL),the other being WYD 983S(WrT).These appliances were both Dodge K1113/Perkins/HCB-Angus.Later also on station was a Landrover L4V(reg-YYA 836X).

There is abit of history attached to the two Dodge's. There were part of a batch of three delivered to Somerset Fire Brigade in 1978. WYD983S was first issued to Wells replacing a Dennis F28 Water Tender 25LYD. WYD984S was issued to Glastonbury as a water tender replacing Dennis F28 Water Tender 24LYD hence the above mentioned photo of it alongside 353MYA. WYD985S was issued to Wiveliscombe replacing Dennis F28 water Tender 20FYD. Now then the interesting part, later on in the year three more Dodge K1113 were delivered but they had bodywork by Cheshire Fire Engineering (CFE). The plan was to issue on to Glastonbury to replace 353MYA and one to Wells to replace Dennis F28 WRL 22FYD. However workshops wanted to keep the machines together as pairs rather than Wells and Glastonbury having different bodied machines but now the dilema how to decide who got the new machines and who got the second hand one from Wells. It was decided to hold a skittles match between the two stations and the winners would get the new machines. Wells won and had the two new machines CYB13S and CYB14S and WYD983S was transferred to Glastonbury. WYD983S and WYD984S were both replaced in 1992 by a new Mercedes/Saxon K803GYD and a second hand Bedford/Saxon FYC92Y (ex Wellington). The Bedford was replaced for a short while by a H reg Mercedes/Saxon however Glastonbury were then reduced to a one pump station and the Mercedes was withdrawn. The Dodges were all sent abroad however 353MYA,22FYD and 25LYD still exist in preservation and we hope to get the together for a reunion in July this year.

Goodness! Lots of stuff I didn't realise, thank you for telling me.

Obviously B872XYA must been a reserve then, I thought there had been a Bedford TK Saxon at Glastonbury, but wasn't entirly sure which one.

It must have been rare in Somerset to have matching pairs at stations, but it is a good idea to have it that way rather than have two different body types at the same station. I didn't know that the CYBs had CFE bodywork so I am gratefull for that bit of information thank you. No one by any chance knows where the other CYB was based do they?

I like the way that which station got the new appliances was decided! A fair way to work it out, and even the losing station didn't come off too bad, they still had their Dodge K.1113 they got new and the second one was nearly new.

Is the Dennis reunion likely to be at a public rally like Odiham as if it is I may try to go to it and get some photographs of them. It about time I put some pictures on this site, I have got my camera now all I need to do is find some nice Fire Engines to photograph!

As I said thank you very much for the information. As am just an ordinary civilian I don't have a lot of access to information about Fire Appliances and so I am very gratefull to all those who have given me the information they have over the last few weeks.

George, the above is correct-CBY 13S and CBY 14S both went to Wells Fire Stn,where as the other Dodge K1113/Perkins/CFE(CBY 12S)went to Porlock, a one pump retained station that at that time also run an L4V(soft-top)registration KYA 387H.

George the Dennis reunion will be in Somerset and not at a rally, I'm hoping to get some interest from one of the Classic magazines to come and write an article. There will be a fourth Dennis F28 there which is my machine 703LYA Dennis F28 Water Tender ex Paulton (Somerset and latterly Avon Fire Brigade but we won't mention that!!). The uniqou thing is that both of the Dennis F28's that were stationed at Wells in the 70's have survived into preservation. We are going to get some photos around Wells at some of their old haunts unfortunately the old Fire Station was knocked down in 1990. When the two Dodges from Wells were replaced in 1992 (same time as Glastonbury) they were given a new Mercedes K804GYD and a second hand Bedford/Saxon index B873XYA (ex Burnham and Bridgwater). In the 70's and 80's Somerset always tried to have matching machines at two pump stations and it was quite rare to find an odd pair. The two Dodge K1113 that went to Wells were the last of this type Somerset bought. The next batch delivered in 1980 were all Bedford TK's with HCB Angus bodywork. They stuck with Bedford until the mid eighties when they went back to Dodge High lines with Saxon bodies. If you have a look at my photos I have posted on this site there are quite a few of Somerset machines.

George/Paul,may I also add that another Bedford TKG/Saxon which done sometime at Glastonbury was FYC 92Y,this was though back in 1999.At that time it was awaiting replacement, and actually,it was the oldest operational pumping appliance in the county at that time.

Added by Pete Matten on 10 May 2009.
I mentioned that one above Pete. The reason it was the oldest pump was because if I remember rightly the Brigade wanted to withdraw the second pump but some funding from another source to keep it was put forward. Hence why the Brigade were not to keen to replace it. It was replaced by a H reg Mercedes for a short while but by then the funding of the second pump had stopped and the decision was taken to withdraw it. They did get however in its place a Rescue Tender.

Sorry Paul,I never noticed you'd mensioned FYC 92Y,but I noticed an article and it mensioned that appliance and that it actually was financed by the Glastonbury Town Council.Thats the only reason why at that time Glastonbury remained a 2 pump station.
