Thanks for adding this Paul, i remember York having YVN468T which looked like this apart from the York machine had a stem light above the cab front, always thought these looked ugly and was glad when York got rid and got either DPY592/ 3 V as it's replacement, ok, yes a Bedford but ....
North Yorkshire seemed to like ugly appliances, they had their fair share of them over the years. But the good thing was they were built on the Bedford chassis and engine which proved most reliable over the many years they were in service.
John, I have heard recently a TAG (Technical Appraisal Group) is being set up to look at a number of replacement items within the Brigade. One of these are to look at "none standard" fire appliances which will replace the Mercedes 4x4's, no idea what they will get but will let you know if I hear anything. Paul.
What was the attraction of these (and so many other) full custom cabs on the TK chassis?
HCB Angus and several others - including some brigade's own workshops - built perfectly fine appliances using the standard Bedford cowl and even the windscreen and front doors, and a few Merrywreather ladders had beautifully executed four door cab extensions.
It can't be that these custom cabs were less expensive, and apart from the few reinforced "safety cabs" which were sold, I really don't see the point...
