Brilliant pic.Funny how scrapyards seem to attract you to them.I drove buses for years and with a few other bus driving mates we would visit bus scrapyards across the UK, and more often than not come across buses and coaches that we once drove. We would always have a story to tell when we found a particular vehicle.I wonder if there is any firefighters out there who visit scrappies looking for their long lost appliance, or is it us bus drivers and ex bus drivers that do mad things.

Scrapyards are very evocative and emotional places. More so if you find a vehicle which you used to know personally. Scrapyard pictures to me are important in that one can then record the ending of a vehicle's life.
The Bus scrapyards at Barnsley occasionally have Fire Appliances in them but they are few and far between, however I've seen (and purchased) a few pictures of scrapyard shots over the years. The Bus yards are notoriously hard to get round these days. Some of the inhabitants (canine or otherwise)are decidedly unfriendly! However there are one or two who will let you round if you approach them in a proffessional manner.
The main problem with Fire Appliances is that there is often only a few individuals in a batch. If these get disposed of seperately then its quite hard to record their disposals afterwards. The vehicles in question can be dispersed quite widely, this picture for instance shows how far this former North Yorkshire Dodge has come to die.
I am recording as much as I can on the appliances of Cleveland Fire Brigade, and the Buses of Cleveland Transit, and I have often visited scrapyards and other operators to collect various details. Quite often an area's local Municipal Bus and Fire Appliance fleets can have a parallel history, particularly if they were (as in the case of Cleveland) controlled by the same Transport Committe.
Trawling through the comments on this site has been extremely productive, I've filled out several gaps in my Cleveland information.
I would imagine that Fire Brigade enthusiasts would tour the scrapyards to the same degree that Bus Enthusiasts do, particularly if vehicles from their local Brigades are involved, and like Bus Enthusiasts many a tale could be told.
