1989 Dennis RS/Excalibur Water Tender Ladder.

Looking very proud in front of the lovely old central fire station in the City of Leicester waiting to
be photographed was this 1989/90 Dennis RS/Excalibur Water Tender Ladder of the Leicestershire
Fire & Rescue Service. It was one of 2 Dennis WrL's on station ready waiting for that next shout.
The large central fire station in the heart of the city was the home to a Chemical Incident Unit,
an Emergency Tender,a Carmichael/Iveco Magirus 100ft Turntable Ladder,and a rather special
Shelvoke & Drewry/Carmichael/Bronto Skylift 27.3mtr Hydraulic Platform.
The on duty crew were kind enough to move all the appliances out through the large wooden
doors for me onto the front of the station one by one,or into the back yard for the photo shoot
way back in the summer of 1991.Great bunch of guys.
More photographs from the Leicestershire Fire & Rescue Service in due course.

How things change Pete, now Leicester central is home to 1 ALP, 2 Pumps, the training pump and the canteen truck. In the rear yard they occasionally have a PM and in the sheds at the back is the Q reg American Ford appliance. I have been to an open day there and as an Architectural Technologist I can say the building is an Architectural gem.

Thanks for this Pete, keep the Dennis stuff coming!

This classic fire station was described at its official opening on the 6th July, 1927 as the finest surely in the whole country. It was 117ft long, had
nine bays for appliance, workshops in the rear and a 90ft drill tower.
The brigades fleet in 1927 consisted of three pumps, an escape carrier, two
pump escapes and two turntable ladders which were all accomandated at the
Central Fire Station except for one pump escape which was allocated to a
branch station at North Evington.
Although today the station houses a minimum of appliances, its been decided
to spend around £5.5m on refurbishing Central, instead of relocating.

I thought there was two ALP's based at central

Having only just put this picture on site, I notice there is an interesting
historical feature on Central in this months Fire Cover(The official Journal
of The Fire Brigades Society). It states in 2006 personnel at Hinkley Fire
Station were to undergo training/familiarisation with the view one of the two
ALP's were being reassigned to Hinkley.ALP 2 has now been relocated.

Thats correct the second ALP is at Hinckley and has been for some time now.

This great photo has been on this site for nigh on a decade and nobody has pointed out the obvious mistake in its description: it's an SS, not an RS.

And the ALP that went to Hinckley is now at Birstall, Leicester's newest station in the north of the city. Never understood why they didn't call it Leicester North, to complete the compass-based set, as it were.

Yelp, I can only surmise that they called it Birstall (rather than Leicester North) to make it more "community friendly" as is the trend these days.

Birstall is no longer the newest fire station. The current ALP at Birstall is due for replacement next year.

Don't just tell us half of it, Simon! Because if Leicester has a new fire station, a) I want to know about it, and b) I want to know how I've possibly overlooked it!

PS, I do hope you're not referring to LeicesterSHIRE!!!

Birstall is classed as a county station and not a city station. Castle Donington is the newest fire station in Leicestershire.

Added by Simon Headley on 29 March 2018.
Thanks for that information, Simon! Like I expected, a new station hadn't grown up through the grass without me noticing. I'm well aware of the new station at Castle Donington, thanks; It's the nearest Leicestershire station to my house! And, unwittingly, you've also explained why Birstall isn't called Leicester Northern too! Well we got there in the end, didn't we? Lol. Happy Easter.
