Durhams old ERF ESCAPE automatic gearbox, very loud. It was one of dads popular Pump. Picutred here with my late Grandad at the TAFER rally based at what was Teesside Airport
I remember that PE it was new to Darlington FB. You are correct when you said that it was noisy Phil...the glass panel in the front nearside door was hindged and could be opened from the outside. The radio handset was fixed inside at the cab footwell and it could be used from the outside....you had no chance of hearing the radio messages inside the cab when the pump was operating!
I wonder if this had the Cummins V8 diesel like SHN 999F, the Darlington Snorkel? If so, was this louder than the more commonplace Perkins V8?
If it had the standard Perkins, it should have been no louder than Darlington's Dennis water tender with the same Perkins engine. These were installed in many ERF, Dennis, Shelvoke, Dodge and Ford fire appliances, and I never heard that they were especially noisy. Or, did ERF simply skimp on the dog house insulation?
This is powered by a Perkins 510 V8 coupled to a Allison automatic gearbox. And you could say it is a bit on the loud side when driven due to the exhaust being right underneath the offside door
Paul - thanks, mystery solved! It must have been quite noticeable compared to the very quiet Rolls-Royce petrol engine in its predeceesor, the Dennid F12.
The Hydraulic Platform was specially modified to house the Cummins Engine due to the new engine plant opening in the town due to good old Civic Pride !
Brett - I lived in Darlington at the time it was delivered. The Mayor also got a ridiculous Chrysler limousine from the US at the same time, because the Darlington engine factory was a Chrysler-Cummins joint venture! There was also a later appliance - I think it was a Dennis - similarly outfitted with a Cummins engine instead of the standard Perkins, presumably for the same reason.
