Inside the Dennis body shop in the 1960's

This is a view of the inside of the Dennis bodyshop taken in either the late 50's or early 60's. In the foreground we see a 'bin waggon' (refuse collection vehicle) and then in a row 5 F24's perhaps? You can also see quite easily the sketal wooden frame before the skinning with either steel or aluminium sheet.

I wonder if these are all Wheeled Escapes for London?

Wow, the days when Fire Engines were BUILT, by Skilled Craftsmen. Not a collection of mass-produced components assembled together; with a Warranty stuck on....

BTW, for we less-enlightened; truck on left translates as "Garbage Truck"......!

Do the bits and mountings show already, if these are going to be Wheeled Escapes: or is it too early in construction to tell ?

Thanks, Doc Barry, for showing us a piece of Fire Engine Heaven.

Regards, from Canada,

What a unique photo!

The step cut outs in the rear side panels and the absence of side lockers behind the rear wheels do indeed indicate that these will carry escape ladders when placed into service.

As for craftsmanship - well, maybe. But what is clear is that there appear to be only eight people working on these five appliances, which does not suggest a very efficient production process. No wonder Dennises were very expensive, and brigades often had to wait a long time for delivery.

If they were built right next to bin lorries, I wonder if the quality standards were the same for fire appliances? Usually, factory workers do not have the flexibility to work at different levels of quality on different products.

from lawn mowers to fire engines the quality was always very high - this is why Dennis products cost twice as much (or more)! as their competitors products
