In the 1960's when the City of Coventry Dennis 'N' Type (DU179) was brought back to the Dennis factory at Guildford, it was left in the hands of the 'Dennis Apprentice Association' to look after her. In this photograph we see two apprentices from the 'shop floor' with a young member of 'management'. 50 years on, they should all be still alive! Does anyone recognise them? Is it you?! I am sure we would all like to hear from you and stories of your days at Dennis.

Derek, I was hoping that someone would recognise these faces. Did your Dad have a copy of this Dennis photograph or tell you of hgappy times at the Dennis works?

Kind Regards,

Barry.

Hi Barry, I have lots of old photos from Dad's Dennis days. He was also in touch with lots of other ex-Dennis workers as part of the Dennis Old Geezers group. He would have been proud as even a current Dennis (Alexander) employee attended his funeral. I too have fond memories of being driven round Guildford on an engine (possibly this one) when Dad arrived home in it one evening. I think I was about the age of 7.

I think the man on the right of the picture is possibly John Hood. I seem to recall his face from my time as an apprentice at the factory on the by-pass from 1964 to 1968

I agree with John Goold, I'm pretty sure it is very young John Hood on the right. I worked with John when he was MD of Hestair Dennis (Pty) in South Africa (circa 1984) - fond memories!

....and lastly the person on the left is me, Doug Handby. I was an apprentice at Dennis at the same time as John Hood - 1957 - 62.

Hello Doug, I'm pleased that you have finally identified yourself! I am sure that it must have been happy days then back in the old Dennis works..

An apprentice at Dennis Bros between 1953-58 I would be very pleased to hear from any Dennis apprentices or staff from my time

Have just uploaded a photo of the Dennis Tool Room staff and apprentices including myself, taken in 1956 - I have other photo's from these times should anybody be interested.

Hi Richard
We have a get-together of old Dennis apprentices & employees - commonly known as the 'Dennis Old Geezers & Girls' or DOG's for short - once a year in October at the Stoke Hotel in Guildford.

This started from the nucleus of the apprentices that worked on the above 1914 fire engine in my time.

If you are interested in coming along please make contact thru this web-page or the relevant link on the Dennis Society web-site.

Cheers. Doug Handby

Hi

My father - Nick Grenside - was an apprentice at Dennis in the 50's - assuming this is DU179 - he told me he purchased it from a scrap yard for £50 and "sold" it to Dennis for the same as he had to go off to his National Service - it was his pride and joy - next to his Bullnose Morris - he restored it and kept it going for most of his life and the highlight of his year was the Historic Commercial run to Brighton each May

Hello Cory, I remember your father and his Bullnose Morris so well but unfortunately do not have any photo's from the times which include him

Added by Richard Morley on 18 April 2018.
Nick Grenside will always be associated with DU179. He had a deep knowledge of all things old Dennis and was part of the golden era at Dennis under the guise of 'Dennis Specialist Vehicles' with John Smith at the helm. During the 90's when Sabres and Rapiers were rolling out as fast as they could make them, Nick provided all the historical support for customers who had renewed interest in their old machines. His name lives on, on the HCVS London to Brighton Trophy for the best Dennis appliance.
