Somerset Heavy Rescue Unit Bedford

The picture taken in the late eighties shows the former Somerset Fire brigade Heavy Rescue unit recovering a Dodge Water Tender from the City of Wells that was en route to a chimney fire when the gear stick came off in the drivers hand. Luckily enough the driver skilfully managed to coast the appliance onto a nearby pub forecourt. The appliance on the left is Dodge appliance with a Carmichael body that was in the reserve fleet at the time, and has been sent as a replacement.

Another great photo, you can see the uniform is on the change. The firemen still have the "Boil in a bag" yellow plastic leggings on and one of the guys has a new type tunic on with reflective stripes. Drove a Dodge similar to these for a while, Happy days. Paul.

Thankyou Paul, are you sure the gearstick wasn't pulled off? Perfect "Dodge" a pub carpark!

Nice to see a picture of the Recovery Vehicle, I wondered what it looked like, also the white based livery makes a change from the red & silver. Now I must get thinking where that pub is, something keeps telling me it's the one on the Glastonbury to Wells road, but the pub I am thinking of is too close to Glastonbury.

Sorry George,it's yellow not white,i got in before Paul!

The RV is a Bedford TKG/Wreckers International bodywork recovery vehicle, its full registration being YYA 838X,it was based at workshops.
At sometime the RV was re-liveried in red.
The Dodge on left of picture is PYB 787P which at one time run out of the retained station at Fleet as a Water Tender.

George, the pub is the Castle of Comfort near Priddy on the Burrington Combe road. When new the recovery truck was red but later on in its life it got sprayed yellow. It is now owned by a recovery company near Taunton. You seem to have a good knowledge of Somerset Fire brigade appliances, do you mind me asking how you have acquired such knowledge?.

Paul, back in the 1980's,a range of booklets came onto the market which depicted some British Fire Brigades.Part 1 covered Hampshire,Dorset and Isle of Wight.Part 2 covered Wiltshire,Glostershire Somerset and Avon, also Fire Service College.Book 3 covered West/Mid/South Glamorgan and Gwent. The next book I beleave was to cover East Sussex,West Sussex(my old brigade)and Surrey. For some reason this was never released.Simon Rowley was hoping to cover every brigade in the UK,but this was not to be?.I still don't know why becuase the books were real interesting and very informative.

Pete,Fleet is in Hampshire,i guess you mean Street?

I hadn't realised that it was yellow, to me it looked white in the picture (my eyesight is not perfect) so many thanks to you all for correcting me. Re PYB787P, I think the spell checker may be having a funny five minutes, I haven't heard of Fleet, was it meant to say Street? Thank you Mr Pickford for telling me where the pub is. I do know a little bit about Somerset F.B appliances but not much. How I aquired it is as follows:

I have lived in Somerset all my life and have seen /saw some of the appliances (E432SYD must have been stalking me!) about over the years, I downloaded a fleetlist from the web a while ago and in my local library there is a book about the history of Somerset F.B.

Ref-above,sorry yes that should read Cranhill Road in Street,(not Fleet)in Somerset.

Hi guys, im looking for a little help and wondered if you could help or point me in the right direction??
I've resently just bought a Dodge Carmichael Fire Engine reg PYC 763P and am trying to colate some information and photos of the truck. I believe it served in somerset and was somewhere around the Somerton area??
Would anyone be able to shed some light on it or be able to help me at all??
Regards
Ryan

Ryan your Dodge PYC763P was issued new in 1976 to the retained station at Ilminster where it served all its life. It was replaced in 1987/88 by another new Dodge and I think it did some time in the Somerset Fire Brigade reserve fleet before being sold and converted into a living home with the water tank and pump being removed. I have some pictures of it if you are interested. Hope you don't mind me asking but what are your plans for it? A lot of its brothers and sisters were sent abroad to Romania.

Ryan, yes your Dodge K1113/Perkins Carmichael Water Tender served with the Somerset Fire Brigade and was stationed at the retained station in Butts Road, ILminster.

Thanks Paul, pictures of the Dodge would be amazing thank you fella, thats amazing new that you have some history on the vehicle. It has indeed been converted into a living home and looks pretty amazing to be honest. My plans for it is to keep it as it is on the inside, an extended roof has been fitted to give extra height on the in side but on the out side I intend to track down and re install the flashing lights, siren and anything else thats missing once I can find out what was on it originally!
Seeings as you seem to be the man in the know maybe you can suggest where I could start my search???
Thanks again Paul

Mike if you let me have your e mail address I have a few more photos you might want to see taken during your time at Wells. Your brother never did quite perfect his gear changing on the Dodge without using the clutch!!
