1973 ERF 84PS/Jennings/Simon 50ft Pump-HP.

This 1973 ERF 84PS/Jennings/Simon Snorkel 50ft hydraulic platform was supplied to the
Somerset Fire Brigade and was stationed at Taunton. The appliance went out of service in
1990 having served for 17 years with the brigade,it then went straight into presevation.
I photographed the appliance back in 1991 at the Southampton Fire Engine and Vintage
Vehicle Rally held at the Royal Victoria Country Park,Netley,Southampton.
At this time, research is on going to try and find out exactly how many of these 50ft HP's
were actually produced, and what brigades they were operated by.
Listed below is the findings so far showing appliance type, brigade or County what operated
them.If anybody knows of others,(40 in total so far),could they please add the details.

Cheers, Alan Jones.

Added by Alan Jones on 07 February 2009.
Alan, Simon J.Ryan from Preston in Lancashire is researching these appliances
and what UK brigades operated them for a future article he's doing for the
fire magazine'Fire Cover', The Official Journal of the Fire Brigades Society.
The one from Slough, Berkshire(Reg-KTF 816P)was purchased in 1983 and went
to Newbridge, Kildare Co......Sorry, no other information available, Pete.

Added by Pete Matten on 07 February 2009.
Southport County Borough operated a Dennis F48 PHP which then passed to Merseyside in 1974.

Alan,
What was the length of Service of the HP based at Slough and was it a ERF body

Best wishes

Christian.

Added by Chris Whitton on 07 February 2009.
Chris, Slough's was a 1975 Dodge K1613/HCB-Angus 50ft Simon PHP, it was sold to
Kildare Co in Ireland in 1983 and served at Newbridge. The Irish registration
of this appliance was, 901 ZW...........Sorry, no other details, Pete.

Is this a Simon snorkel boom? In my friend photo there are a Bedford fitted with similar design snorkel boom. But the word "Firefly Snorkel" on it.

Added by Bomba Boy on 08 February 2009.
Yes, this is a Simon Snorkel SS50. If memory serves me rightly, the term 'Firefly Snorkel' was only used on the earlier DS50 version, eg: the Bedford (164 YFK) that was supplied to Worcester City & County.

Added by Ian Moore on 08 February 2009.
Bomba Boy, yes this is a 50FT Simon HP.The one you might be refering to could
be the one which served Worcester City & County which was a Bedford/Firefly.
Worcester City and County had a Bedford/Firefly, but I've noticed due to error
on printing, York should have been an ERF.This is not my mistake but publisher.
The last part of the above should read....York had an ERF/Simon 50ft PHP.
The way its been re-published(printed), is not the way it was sent in?.Pete.

Added by Pete Matten on 08 February 2009.
Thanks Ian, I'm not the one thats researching these somewhat unusual appliances
so any help will be of course be most gratefully appreciated, thankyou very much.
I'm actually hoping that Simon(interested party)gives me a ring in the next few
days to see where we go from here to gather more info, and maybe some pictures.

Added by Pete Matten on 08 February 2009.
The above York 1971 ERF 84PS/ERF-Firefighter body 50ft PHP(Reg-XDM 494J)was delivered in the Coventry Yellow livery to the City of York Fire Brigade.
It was sold to Carlow Co in Ireland in 1980 serving at Carlow fire station
after being given the new Irish registation-TIC 224.

Added by Pete Matten on 08 February 2009.
I actually have a listing of all Simon Snorkels as ordered (home and abroad) dated 1969, and should be able to draw one up of all UK ones from start to finish.

Another couple from the North East, West Hartlepool, Bedford.
Durham County, Dennis which went onto to serve in Southern Ireland

Added by Brett Clayton on 09 February 2009.
Brett, thanks for the info.Durham's was a 1974 Dennis F49/Dennis 50PHP which
went out of service in 1985(reg-RUP 529M)and sold to Mayo Co in Ireland and
served at the fire station at Castlebar with the Irish registration-EIS 78.
I can't find any info at the moment on West Hartlepools Bedford?.Thankyou.

Added by Pete Matten on 09 February 2009.
There's even more to the ex-Durham one once it went to Southern Ireland. Approximately mid-2003, County Mayo sold it on to County Cavan !

Added by Ian Moore on 10 February 2009.
The Southampton Fire Engine and Vintage Vehicle Rally was an excellent event, such a shame that it is no longer running. It was a great venue and used to attract great support. I have very fond memories of taking my old Dennis F38 ex Essex Pump escape T00 928E (that I used to own) there each year. Pete if you have any pictures of it there/elsewhere, I'd dearly love to see them. I never had a great camera and as a result hold few pictures of good quality of it.

Added by John D on 10 February 2009.
Ian, any help in the research of the Hydraulic Platforms used in the UK would be
really very much appreciate, I'd have an interest in that information please.
In reference to the 50ft Simon HP's used, this would be an added bonus and very
much appreciated because due to the years passing, many now have been forgotten.
I look forward to any information you can provide for me.........Thanks, Pete.

Pete
Fife had one, its a Bedford TKEL/HCB-Angus/Simon SS50 reg No NFG249H. This info is on the history of scottish fire brigades Graeme Kirkwood's web on station A2 Glenrothes page.

Added by Grant Melville on 10 February 2009.
John, I did take a rather nice picture of your old 1967 Dennis F38/Dennis that
was originally a pump escape at the Southampton Rally in 1993 or 1994.
I will post the photo into site very shortly, it could even be you driving?,
someone's sitting up in the driver's seat looking very proud of themself.

Added by Pete Matten on 10 February 2009.
Pete,
I've drawn a spreadsheet up of all 50' HPs that entered service in the UK (and there were quite a few !) Could you let me have an email address please, as there is no way I could post it on here.

Added by Ian Moore on 10 February 2009.
Grant, I've actually got a picture of Fife's Bedford but did'nt know the
body, or the registration because the picture is a side shot only. Thanks
very much for the information and the help tracing another one....Pete.

Was not Hartlepool's a combined HP/ET ?

Added by Barrie Green on 10 February 2009.
Ian, find your picture 5519 of Lewes's Landrover and under a comment my name is
highlighted, this gives my email address.Thank you very much for your help.Pete.

Added by Pete Matten on 10 February 2009.
Barrie,
No, but both the Burnley and Halifax ones were combined HP/ETs, and the Halifax one was particularly worthy of note in that it didn't have a pump.

Added by Ian Moore on 11 February 2009.
Pete,
Thank you - list will be sent a little later today.

Added by Ian Moore on 11 February 2009.
Ian, I don't want to sound critical, but according to-Carmichael"The Family Years", a special publication by The Fire Brigades Society(2004), it says
that Halifax's 1965 Albion Chieftain/Carmichael Simon/ET/HP 50ft showed
that it was the possible basis for pump hydraulic platforms which were to
be seen as a way forward in the mid-sixties.It also says the machine had
a pump, aerial access and a large crew cab to get manpower to the scene.
It did have a pump, maybe they just used it as an ET/HP though?.....Pete.
PS, I look forward to hearing from you reference above info.Thankyou.

Added by Pete Matten on 11 February 2009.
Pete,
You should have the list by now.

Added by Ian Moore on 11 February 2009.
Brett, Hartlepools was a 1969 Bedford TK/HCB-Angus SS50 PHP tranferring to Durham
County Fire Brigade during emalgamation in 1974.It went out of service in 1984.

Added by Pete Matten on 11 February 2009.
Pete:
Re the Halifax machine, it did not have a main pump, though it did have a first-aid hose-reel. It certainly wasn't a PHP as the concept was envisaged, though many people - largely as a result of assumption - presumed that it was.

Added by Ian Moore on 11 February 2009.
Pete:
Me again ! Sorry, the Hartlepools SS50 didn't transfer to Durham in 1974, it transferred to Cleveland in 1974 - where it became their fleet number 37.

Added by Ian Moore on 11 February 2009.
hi ian, have you a pic of hartlepool, s SS50 that you could put on the site and any early Teesside machines 68 to 74 vintage thanks ian mac

Added by Ian Mcpherson on 12 February 2009.
Thanks Ian for the added info in reference to the Halifax appliance, and
also the location mistake on my part in reference to Hartlepools one.

Added by Pete Matten on 12 February 2009.
The Halifax appliance survived up until about 5 years ago in a yard between Leeds and Bradford when my son Mark last called in the guy had just scrapped it, shame, although it was in a bad way it was restorable !

Added by Rick Loudon on 12 February 2009.
Hi Ian,
Give me a couple of minutes to dig the slide of the Hartlepool SS50 out, and I'll scan it in then post it.

Added by Ian Moore on 12 February 2009.
Ian - I also have a fully referenced database of PHPs which I am happy to share with you if you e mail me off line. I have got to 46 machines now I believe using material from this site and other sources.

Added by Peter Williams on 16 February 2009.
Pete, from your information data, do you have any details of when Kents 3 PHP's
went out of service please?, it will help me in my research on them.....Pete.

Added by Bernard O'Malley on 11 November 2009.
Cumbria had a Ford/SS50 HCB machine - at Workington.

Added by Rob on 12 November 2009.
The one at Stockport(Greater Manchester)was a 1971 ERF/Jennings/SS50(50')and was registered-VDB953K.It went out of service in 1984.The one from Swansea(West Glamorgan)was from 1973 and was a Dennis F48/Dennis SS50(50')and was registered- HWN771L and this one didn't actually go out of service until 1990.

Added by Pete Matten on 12 November 2009.
Thanks Rob.Yes the one with Cumbria was from 1972 and was Ford D1617/HCB-Angus/SS50(50')with the reg-DRM620K and it remained in service with the Cumberland FB until 1990.

Added by Pete Matten on 12 November 2009.
An interesting side-bar on Snorkels.....

Nearby to me, the Town of Sussex (but located in Kings County!) has no Aerial apparatus: however, it's Volunteer Fire Dept. has an agreement with the local Electrical Power Commission to rent one of their Boom Trucks (Snorkel-type; with two 1-man buckets), as needed, for fire-fighting purposes.

So, they can't be all that bad.....

Southport Fire Brigade had a similar arrangement with the street lighting department before purchasing a Pump/HP of their own....that would be in the early 1960s

Added by Barrie Green on 13 November 2009.
A picture is now on the site of the 1972 ERF/HCB-Angus/SS5O(50ft)once operational with the County of Cambridgeshire(picture 20599)and registered-SVE 668K.The appliance was sold in 1983 going to County Monaghan in Ireland, and then re-registered 901BI.

Added by Pete Matten on 19 November 2009.
As Peter's list shows, Hull had an ERF chassised HP/pump in th e1970s. Ran as second engine from Central Fire station, replacing an AEC Merryweather PE. Wasn't popular as it was so slow. I saw it in action at several fires, including dowsing the roof of the house next door!

Dennis F45 DWY 745H was a PHP in the West Riding County Fire Service. There is a picture of it on here and a better one on Flickr

Added by Wayne Ogden on 09 February 2013.
Any of you guys know what happened to Dennis F108 PHP Reg No LFM 673J. Ex Chester City. Passed into Cheshire. Believe it went on to serve in Ireland.
Would welcome any info or pics following it's transfer. Drove that machine hundreds of times at Chester. Loved driving it but needed to show the utmost respect to drive it safely, as it was top heavy. Very handy tool.

Added by Tony Jones on 10 February 2013.
Apparently the Hartlepool example had concrete put into its front bumper to stop the front end taking off when it went over railway crossings etc. And the South Shields Dodge was sold from Tyne and Wear to Cleveland (where it was never used)and then on again to Rushbrook Hall (near Guisbrough/Saltburn)before ending its days at a scrapyard near Charltons (near Guisbrough)Look at my collection on this site and you will find a picture of it in the breakers yard. It was broken up some years ago now.

Added by Chris Hall on 11 February 2013.
Tony Jones, the 1971 Dennis F108/Dennis SS50(reg-LFM 673J) finally was sold to Hoist-Line on the Isle of Man and re-registered UMN 999.It went out of service in 1988.

Added by Pete Matten on 11 February 2013.
Cheers Pete, thanks for the above info. Does anyone have pics of this machine after it's fire service? Would appreciate any help.

Added by Tony Jones on 12 February 2013.
Tons of very interesting comments.

The other interesting question is this. Did any of these brigades actually like the PHP concept well enough to actually replace their old ones at the end of their service lives with another new PHP?

Added by Rob Johnson on 27 August 2014.
Later reincarnated as the CARP!!??

Added by Neal Glover on 28 August 2014.
Rob. I used , and drove both Durham Counties PHP and the 50ft Snorkel and in my opinion were absolute dogs coompared to the other Dennis appliances's we used they were cumbersome and went through brake shoes and tyres at a phonemal rate they also needed to carry other ladders because in Peterlee where PHP was stationed the gardens we so large the machine could not get to close enough to the buildings to be of much use and in Durham City the Snorkel needed to carry a short extension ladder a 35ft , roof ladder and a hook ladder ! Eventually the were taken off 1st turn out and used as back up or purerly as a "special".
They even sent the Snorkel to S4 Bishop Auckland which was a very rural area but it would'nt fit through most of the farm gates I would say though they had trmendous pumps they totally flooded out Doggarts department store at a small fire lol.
They ended up spending a lot of time in the spare bays at Darlington and Bishop Aucland before disposal

Added by Dave Elms on 29 August 2014.
So, three years after I asked, nobody has found a brigade which actually replaced any of these numerous PHPs with another one!

Another case of an answer to a question no-one was asking?

Now that I live in Chicago, we do have two 55 foot snorkels, which are frequently used at multiple alarm fires, and one very elderly 95 foot one, which is "special called" only. But the rest of our 49 strong aerial fleet are conventional 100 foot ladders and tower ladders.

The Telesquirt, a pumper with a boom mounted monitor, was also once quite popular in the US but has also pretty much died out, especially as tower ladders with monitors and pre-piped plumbing have become more commonplace.

Added by Rob Johnson on 11 February 2017.
Rob England has a brand new Telesquirt, originally ordered by Greater Manchester, they cancelled and it was picked up by Lancashire. Much hyped. See www.rosenbauer.co.uk/its-here-the-at-stinger/. Also on You Tube in action. Uses the boom technology from ARFF branded Stinger. A modern Simonitor which Lancashire also had, as did Manchester. Elsewhere on this site.

Added by Peter Williams on 14 February 2017.
Peter: Thanks, I have seen the Rosenbauer with the piercing nozzle boom, originally designed to pierce aircraft fuselages and spray water or foam inside.

This seems to be a useful vehicle concept for attic fires and also lightweight steel industrial buildings, but perhaps one or two units like this may not be able to respond quickly enough to these specific kinds of incidents to be of much practical value.

Added by Rob Johnson on 08 August 2017.
The Bury one UEN999L was actually an ERF not a leyland and passed into Greater Manchester

Added by Danny Jones on 31 October 2019.
ERF84PS should read ERF84PFS. All the pump hydraulic platforms (PHP) were on the heavier ERF84PFS version.
