Tyne and Wear's Fire brigade Salvage tender

This is BTN47V Tyne and Wear's original Salvage Tender. I photographed this in 1988/9 on the opening of Hadrian Road fire station. I last saw this vehicle a couple of years ago in a yard next to the A19 near the Leeds turnoff. This yard also had three AEC Matador military wagons.

In the 60s Newcastle and Gateshead Joint Fire Service had what looked a lot like a former Bedford ambulance in use as a salvage tender. I wonder if it lasted until this much larger unit was first brought onto the fleet strength? Not every fire brigade operated salvage tenders as late as 1988, and they have now apparently completely disappeared.

Ed: salvage gear is sometimes on Operational Support Units.

OSUs can mean anything the brigade desires. I doubt any two are the same.

Neal: Many German brigades operate one or more “logistics” trucks, which are conceptually very similar to the OSU, except that they are not pre-loaded. Instead the interior is set up to accept a number of standard sized wheeled baskets, each of which can be already loaded with a very wide variety of different types of extra equipment to supplement items already at at incident on pumps and/ or various specials. Because each basket is ready to go , It does not take very long to load the truck, and it is a very flexible and responsive system.

The actual trucks vary in size from five to fourteen tons; in a few cases, the larger ones pulls similarly designed six to eight ton trailer if necessary.

A few of the larger units have a six seat crew cab, but mostly they just have a standard two or three seat factory cab.

In Belgium, the “material truck” used to be commonplace. It was essentially a pumper without the pump or water tank. It carried up to six crew and loads of extra hoses, ladders, fittings, tools and bigger items which might not fit on a water tender, like the old jumping sheet as well as usually salvage equipment too.

As pumps have grown larger with more locker space and capacity, these have also died out.
