1909 Dennis 'N' Type

Although Dennis fire Engine production had only started in 1908, this 1909 Dennis 'N' Type looks very much a complete machine witha place for everything. The design would remain almost unchanged for the next 15 years.

Well done Barry, nice to see an original early photo of a classic Dennis'N'type.
Thanks very much for sharing the picture with us.

I'm sure this is like the old Airfix Kit without the Wheeled Escape.

Is the ladder on this appliance an early wheeled escape, and what hight would it reach.

Paul - interesting question!

A three section wooden ladder, with winding gear and a pair of tiny wheels so that it could be trailed along, rather than pushed.

Knowing the approximate dimensions of the N type, I would hazard a guess that this was about 40 or 45 feet when extended - around 12/13 meters.

But I have never seen any other ladder like this anywhere, in this country or overseas!

Surely, there must be a historian looking at this site who can give us chapter and verse?

By the way the N type was the first ever centrifugal fire pump, at a time when reciprocating (piston) pumps were the norm all over the World.

By comparison, it was lighter and more compact, and it had the additional advantage that it could boost mains pressure when working from a hydrant, while the reciprocating pumps could not use the incoming pressure because of their design.

They were adapted rather quickly, but Merryweather still supplied at least one appliance with a reciprocating pump as late as 1954 - nearly half a century later...

Looks more like a four section ladder to me.

Younger eyes! Must have been very heavy...
