It is a Dennis body on a Thornycroft Nubian Major chassis the engine was a Cummins 903 desiel 5 speedfitted with Schammel gearbox semi-automatic. great truck to drive and operate monitor jet range 180ft and a decent application 5000gpm Came into RAF Fire Service in late 77 at RAF St Mawgan.
To add to Roberts comments, apart from the Mk 6 ( Alvis / Pyrene ) this in the opinion of many of us who used it, one of the best machines ever to have been in military service. Its tank capacity and performance were a vast improvement over previous machines. After all, 30 years service is testament enough.
Used one of these at the amoco oil refinery fire (from RAF Brawdy) - depite what the LAFS report said the MK9 operated at 14 bar for 8 hours and put out the fire in the bund
Ron, somtimes the local authorities didnt like the fact that we could outpump them as regards to foam production. I served in the RAF and several local brigades and it was mainly senior officers who were cynical of the RAF Fire Services abilities. As far back as Flixboro and at other shouts, the RAF has always held its own. Its funny but these white helmets always try and ramp up their own achievments when reporting a major incident. On a local level though, I have always met a healthy respect between ordinary firemen for each others roles. Maybe major incidents show the lack of proper emergency planning which exists in many areas today.
I was serving at St Mawgan from 86 to late 89 and undoubtedly drove that truck in the period of the photo. I agree with John Stott, this was the best all round fire tender I worked with. Nothing fancy but totally did the job.
