The extra heavy unit had a 1150 gpm rated pump instead of the 700 gpm heavy unit installation, but was otherwise pretty much identical.

I have often wondered how many of these two different types were built, and how they compared to the numbers of other WWII emergency units which were issued, such as ATVs, 65 foot ladders, 100 foot ladders and MDUs.

Does any WWII NFS historian have this kind of information?

The EHUs seem to have had a longer wheelbase giving an extra locker each side. They also had 7" suction rather than the 51/2" of the heavy units.
