You can also find this MAN LE 10.180 watertender in the garage of the Volunteer Fire brigade of Salmünster. Magirus built this vehicle in 2004, and had 4WD.
The LF 10/6 specification replaced the old LF 8 as the basic pump appliance for German volunteer fire companies. The chassis was upgraded from 8 to 10 tons, with a more powerful engine, either 2X4 or very often 4X4 like this MAN example.
The pump was upgraded to 1000 LPM at 10 AT, and a water tank of 600 liters was added for the first time. The crew seats for nine were retained and the equipment schedule modestly revised, with an increase in BA sets carried. It now included either a 23mm hose reel or a pre-connected 45mm flaked hose for the first attack.
In practice, many companies exceeded this basic specification when it came to their actual purchases. Many were delivered as rescue pumpers with additional extrication gear, some had 1600 LPM pumps and it was common for a 900 liter tank to be fitted - as there was space and payload headroom for the extra water. Many towns also specified a CAFS installation, with the newest designs catering to both class A and B fires.
