NFS Austin K4 Merryweather 60ft TL.

This was one of fifty Austin K4/Merryweather 60ft hand-operated turntable ladders built between
1942/43 to Home Office specifications for the war effort for the National Fire Service.
The Austin K4/Merryweather TL's for the NFS were registered GXN 201-250.

I am re-submitting this picture due to the poor quality of my other picture(picture 7551)and now
having found all my old negatives,I am sending in this better photograph of GXN 219.

can anyone tell me the exact shade of grey that the NFS appliances were painted in?. I am currently creating miniature versions of some of the WW2 era NFS appliances but am unsure exactly what shade of grey was used.

Battle ship gray

Stevie, Revell Matt 43 is what I've used on all my NFS model appliances and its
a good match. After you've applied any tranferes, use Humbrol Gloss Cote.Thats
how its spelt. This keeps the tranferes on and gives a slight shine(not gloss),
like a satin finish to the finished model.Looks good.

Strictly speaking, the colour is BS361C number 632, Dark Admiralty Grey

i believe that GXN 219 is now in the care of Manston Fire Museum

All,
I'm fairly certain that BS361C was not published until well after the end of WW2.
So battleship grey would be the more likely designation for the colour when the vehicles were originally ordered by the Ministry of Supply.

Steve

The code number changed, the colour didn't. There were 2 battleship greys dark for the Home Fleet and light for foreign service.

BS 381c was first published in 1930, BSC 32 Dark Admiralty Grey was in the original edition of BS381c. it was BSC 32 that was specified for Home Office contract type emergency appliances; The HO contracts placed via the Ministry of Works also includes those appliances from the HO range that were required for ARP purposes by other ministries eg Air Ministry , War Office etc- I have pictures taken in 1943 on an RAF station with the trailer pumps still in grey- sorry I digress, in 1949 BS 381c went over to a 3 numeral system, the first numeral indicating the colour group; the numeral 6 was alloted to greys and BSC 32 became BSC 632 ; ( most colour numbers were simply given this additional numeral but a handful got a totally new number) In Home Office and (later after its formation) NFS memorandums the colour was simply refered to as "32 grey" In BS documents the colour's full title was Dark Admiralty Grey . Within the Admiralty there was a totally seperate range of paints Outwith the BS ranges was used on HM ships- some of these had Battle ship in their titles and there were also deck grey- However I digress; BSC 32 became BSC 632 without change to the actual colour.
