TFD has 86 aerials of different types, but the majority are either 40 or 30 meter towers with a basket, with the longer units on tandem axle chassis as portrayed here.

They cover a city population of 9.4 million, and are based at full-time fire stations.

They all have crew cabs and are staffed by dedicated specially trained crews, as in the US. These are rescue specialists, reflecting the primary role of these trucks. Still, as can be seen in this great photo, the trucks do all have pre-piped waterways and a basket monitor as standard equipment.

Standard response to incidents in central areas of the city include six pumps, two ladders, a rescue squad and two or more command vehicles, along with one or more TFD ambulances - a total of around fifty personnel.

Yet another rather unsettling comparison with London.

TFD has one aerial for every 108, 000 citizens. LFB has one per 561, 000, and has none over 30 meters.

Thirty years ago LFB had more than twice as many as they do now, but the number of tall buildings has not declined. So now each one has to cover an average of over 40 square miles. No wonder response times are so slow!
