1990 Volvo FL10 8X4/Angloco 33-2TI Bronto Skylift ALP.

London Fire Brigade 1990 Volvo FL10 8X4/Angloco Bronto Skylift 33-2TI(110ft)Aerial Ladder Platform.
Registered H901-906 XYF,these were to be allocated to Tottenham,Dowgate,Wimbledon,Forest Hill,
Wembley and Plaistow fire stations. This photograph was taken in 1991 and shows H903 XYF(ALP 3)at
Wimbledon fire station.
The appliances were based on a Volvo FL10 8X4 chassis and were powered by a 9.6 litre six cylinder
four-stroke direct injection diesel engine, and also had a Allison HT754CR five speed auto gearbox.
When first introduced by the LFB in 1990,they were actually the largest aerial appliances in use in the
London Fire Brigade, and in the United Kingdom.
Qualified HP(hydraulic platform)operators from across the brigade underwent two weeks of training on
the new appliances, many qualified operators then moving station to be where the appliances were to
be allocated across the city of London.

Are these ALPs still in service. If not any equivalent sized ALPs replaced them?

If not mistaken this Volvo FL10 ALP is either decommissioned or kept as reserve. LFB had newly acquired Mercedes Econic Magirus ALPs which will replaced the older ALPs.

Heard the same, which means why were these bought in the 1st place if a normal tl /alp unit with a reach of 100 feet can be used, or why aren't they buying like for like? only time will tell i guess....

All six of these ALP's were disposed of the last two quite recently - within the last eighteen months

These were only 100 feet reach actually, just the newer ALPs have one more telescoping boom section so the vehicle can be shorter and more manoeuvrable.

Ah, but these Bronto Skylifts have a "knuckle", so the last 15 feet can be depressed lower than the straight line of the telescoping Aerial. Great for getting over parapets, guard rails of elevated roads, etc

That is how the Basket (Bucket) is stowed behind the Crew Cab, with the "Knuckle" folded right back.

Must be a good idea, as these Bronto Skylifts (From Finland) are sold all over the world, fitted on a wide variety of chassis. Just check out this very 'Site, for a number of them.

A nearby city, to me, always straight Aerials (TTL's) for many years - has just purchased an E-One Bronto Skylift, retiring an Aerial (TTL); and supplementing a Quint (ARP/CARP).

Sure would be neat, if someone has a picture of one in action - showing the extended boom and "Knuckle".

Me again; picture 2667 shows an HP up, along with 2 TTL's (Aerials); albeit a Simon Snorkel, but same idea, with the "Knuckle".

I can asure you that these Volvo/Angloco 33-2TI(thats 110ft)Bronto Skylifts
were the height as I've stated in the information provided.
I decided to send this photo into the site because even though today these
appliances are no longer on the run with the London Fire Brigade, because of
there historical nature(height)I think the appliance deserved a viewing.

The new ALPs, which are Magirus ALP320 booms on the Mercedes-Benz Econic 2628 chassis, also have the knuckle you talk about. As does every ALP ever built.

I remember seeing one of these resting in a vehicle breakers yard at Styal near to Manchester Airport about 20 years ago now.
