As Barry points out correctly, this is a Thornycroft Nubian Major, built by Carmichael. Its very unusual in that the sides of the appliance were finished in aluminium(not painted)and it also had dual roof monitors.

Nice picture of a classic John, Pete, the top monitor looks like a 20x, probably fitted to use at a smaller job, the larger monitors could be a pain at a smaller aircraft as the jet would overshoot the fire.
This was the last of the Birmingham Airport 'Majors' . Built by Carmichael of Worcester and had a two man cab with a hatch to reach the monitor platform. This machine was larger than the two earlier Majors Fire 3&4 and was substantially different in body layout .Initially it had a tilting tower built on top of the unit for high level work . The machine had it's own dedicated bay built at the old AFS at Birmingham (outside Hangar 2) Ted Savage ( my late grandad ) was the CAFO then and he was meticulous (some say pedantic!) in how the machines were looked after . Me and fellow fire-fighters son now own Major 3 and 4 but this machine pictured is privately owned down at Kemble airfield now. More info to follow!
This appliance has been in my posseson for over a year now and resides at kemble and still in use for fire training, and when its not working im slowly bringing her back to her former glory, last onwner didnt really look after her. any history or infomation would be apperciated.
Hi, I knew Ted ( Savage), very well when I worked at Birmingham airport 1975-1978 as a government officer. I did my PPL at Elmdon and as usual for a first solo flight the fire service was informed to be on stand by. Usually a fire engine was positined to the runway threshhold ‘just in case’. On this occasion Ted knew it was me so took the opportunity to call a full practice ‘emergency’! Imagine my shock as I turned ‘Final’ to see the whole Birmingham airport fire brigade waiting for me, blue lights flashing, at the runway end ‘24’ I believe.
