Thornycroft Nubian Airfield Crash Tender
Seen at the aviation museum of Kemble airfield, gloucstershire was this Thornycroft Nubian airfield crash tender.
Built for the Bristol Aeroplane Company Ltd. by Hampshire Car Bodies on a Thornycroft Nubian 6-wheel drive chassis first registered by Bristol in December 1962. The completed tender was delivered on 23rd March 1963.
28 RHY spent its entire working life at Filton in the role of Airfield Crash Tender. Among many incidents and notable occasions, this appliance attended the roll-out of 'Concorde 002' in Septmeber 1968 and stood by for the first flight of '002' on the 9th March 1969.

Engine - Rolls Royce B81 Mk.5Q 6.75 litre straight 8 petrol (approx 200 hp)
Pump - Coventry Climax U.F.P Mk.6D
Water capacity - 800 gallons

CO2 capacity - 200 lbs

John, and david I'm a Ex RAF and BAC Filton fireman and I can tell you this was a cow to drive just the same as the DP2, and I did my HGV at st Athan with Cpl Swan and had my test with Taff Jones who said after the hill start drive the heap back to camp as I'm sure the gearbox is hanging out of it and you have passed just in case it breaks down before we get back

This appliance was still in the Brabazon hangar at Filton a month or so ago.
