For us in Europe who are not familair with this type of appliance can you explain the purpose of the 'dumps' and how they are used tatically?

Sure, the Dumps are chutes designed to very quickly get water out of the Tanker into a "portable hydrant" at the scene of a fire where there are no hydrants near-by. Portable hydrants are basically like a pool set up in the roadway or where ever is best suited. Tankers quickly dump their loads of water, filling up the pools/fold-a-tanks so the fire engines can then draft from them. This is common where I live now, the very rural eastern shore of Maryland where hydrants are few and far between.

Thanks for the detailed answer.

Barry, the AFS used a similar thing called portable dams up until the early sixties, although you have to be over a certain age to remember it! Its a good idea for rural areas still.
