Frankford, Delaware Caddillac Ambulance

I love these caddy ambos. This is a 1968 Cadillac ambulance still owned by the Frankford Volunteer Fire Company in Sussex County, Delaware. This rig ran ambulance calls up to 1994 when it was finally retired. At that time it was the oldest ambulance in the State of Delaware certified to run emergency calls.

Those were the days.

Ambulance response in America used to be based on the concept that you did not try to treat the patient in situ or in the vehicle, but rather drive him or her as fast as possible to the nearest hospital.

Quite the reverse of today's protocol, this approach called for a very powerful, only slightly modified station wagon with a monster V8 engine and hardly any room inside - quite a contrast with modern paramedic boxes.

Similar chassis and bodywork were also used as hearses - and some private ambulances served both roles (at different times) - no kidding!

This approach to EMS response was known as "scoop and scoot" - not something which would be encouraged in our rather more enlightened age...
