Paul:

Uh, looks like the ALP has arrived a bit late to save that building in the back-ground ..... like several hundred years, maybe!

Forgive me, I come from a Volunteer Rural Fire Department where the most vintage item is probably our Chief (hope he is not reading this !).

And, I suppose here in York; the Roman garrison probably had an organized Fire Brigade.
Good to see a shot of The New (being operated) and The (very) Old.

The Tower in the background originates from the 1300's, and is named Clifford's Tower after Rodger de Clifford who was hanged there in 1322.
I have a picture of one of York's older Machines here, an ERF(PAJ576R) Turntable Ladder/Metz, a machine which survives at an offroad centre in Northumberland.
The Romans had one of the earliest organised Fire Brigades. This was known as 'The Vigiles' (from where the English word 'Vigilant originates from)organised in the same fashion as a Legionary Cohort. Every major City in the Roman World had a Vigilies Cohort.

North Yorkshire does have two Merc alps, This one based at York, the other on a 57 plate, based a Scarborough, there is also one on order for Harrogate to replace the X reg Volvo alp based at Harrogate.

I only hope that both the in service Scarborough appliance and the one on order for Harrogate are more reliable in service than the one based at York, otherwise when all 3 are off the run, they will be no ALP cover for North Yorks !

Thanks Chris:

So, York's Fire Service started nearly 2,000 years ago; set up by the Romans. Makes you think, doesn't it ?

Our own VFD started in 1954 A.D.; and our own Chief, somewhat earlier - maybe, he did do some time with the Romans ... (:<] !
