Wallsend Fire Station

The fire station was built with Steamers in mind, not motorised appliances. The restricted length of the building meant that when reversing in (there are no back doors) the driver had to be very careful as the escape ladder had to be positione no more than six inches from the back wall otherwise the fron doors could not be closed! In later years the brigade purchased special short wheelbase appliances to suit this station.

Hence why the Shelvoke ET (ETN 909W) was originally quite short, (see picture 5532) as it was originally intended for delivery to Wallsend Fire Station and the firemen of station Golf (Wallsend) actually had an input in to the ET's design. The ET was actually delivered to it's neighbouring station on the Fossway as a direct replacement for the existing Foxtrot 4 EBB 783C (see picture 1609) and later extended with a weight added to the rear to rectify stability problem (see picture 5510).
